Federal guidelines to heat to 65 degrees and Greg McPherson checks a model home used in an experiment to determine effects of shading on home energy usage. Placement of Trees Around Home Could Be Energy Factor Greenbacks may prove to be the LOGAN proper equation for Intermountain area homeowners hoping to cut home energy costs, according to a study being conducted by Utah State University landscape architecture student Greg McPherson. "There have been several studies done about the use of plants to save energy," Mid McPherson. "But no studies have been done especially for this area and especially concerning the placement of trees around homes." Since structures are easier to move than trees, McPherson constructed miniature houses to use in his experiments. The models are typical middle income homes on a small sclae. Materials used to construct the models are those most frequently used in new construction in the Intermountain area. The models were rigged with thermocouples and then set In various spots which would allow testing of full-suconditions and partial shade, their effects on house temperatures. "Two elements must be considered," said McPherson. "First, there is the thermal resistance of a house, which is the resistance of the structure to heat gain and loss from the outside. Insulation is a critical factor in heat resistance. three-bedroo- one-stor- y, full-sha- n, . But thermal capacitance is also important. That is the ability of the house to transfer and store heat." After completion of his masters degree study McPherson hopes to be able to answer three questions: (1) Does shading around a house give significant cooling? (2) How doe- the canopy dentrees better to use some Are affect the cooling? sity than others? (3) Is shading more useful on certain areas of a house than on others? "So far the results of the study indicate some interesting new possibilities for homeowners concerned about their home energy use," said McPherson. "First of all, it appears that the best way to create a comfortable environment may be to reduce temperature fluctuation. Trees may help reduce fluctuation by keeping the sun from hitting the house and by keeping warm air from up." Because his early test results indicate that there may be a great deal of heat gain through east and west walls and more heat gain later in the summer and early in the fall due to the ancle of the sun McPherson is now working on calculations for strategic tree placement and for best tree height for various sun elevation angels. "I want to be able to determine what times of the year houses in this area most need shade." cool to recognize 78 a deep freeze from the time they enter adolescence until their 23rd birthdays. Adolescents are often defined in terms of their troubles, says Dr. Gisela Konopka, noted social science researcher and professor emeritus of the University of Minnesota. Dr. Konopka discussed some of her research concerning adolescent girls during a visit to Utah State University. Adolescents are people, the professor noted. "They are not to be feared," she added. "Adolescence is a time of rebirth. It is a time to find out .'who I am.' " Adolescence is characterized by the beginnings of sexual maturity, withdrawal from adults, a heightened consciousness of self, the realization thai the adolescent is part of other people's lives, of values, a thirst for adventure, a sense of loneliness and a high degree of social vulnerability. "The thick skins of adolescents are very thin," Dr. Konopka said. Teens need to be listened to and recognized as adults, Dr. Konopka said. They also need to be imother people. portant-to Dr. Konopka recently conducted a survey of 1,000 girls from across the United States. She warned against drawing conclusions about what all teenage girls are like from the results of the survey, but she said she discovered several things occurred frequently enough to be cause for concern. Among the girls surveyed, there was a "yearning for good, close, supportive family life," the researcher said. "The desire to be married right away is disappearing," she said. "Most expect to wait until at least age 20 to marry." The girls reported that they wanted husbands who would also be friends. Most wanted children. From the study, Dr. Konopka said she found many positive pictures of adolescents and many conflicts. However, she noted, the generation gap is not unbridgeable. Adolescents need love, autonomy, a say in their own destiny, and they need to help others, she said. anticipates the degrees target for Maximizenergy Computerized preventive maintenance is a approach to energy savings, also budget-minde- d providing credible manpower justification, improved system operation. documentation, UUDDUUDI in either preventive management. ing control calls out new strategies.
