Indiana has four losses but three of them are to Ohio State, Michigan and Purdue which isn't exactly shabby. So, Saturday's win over Utah was more than satisfactory as the Cougars dominated the Utes on both ends of the field but there is no time for celebrating because the whole season rides on next week's game. Saturday quarterback Marc Wilson set an NCAA record for the most yards passing against the same team in two games. Two years ago the BYU Heisman Trophy candidate threw for an NCAA record 571 yards and Saturday he tacked on 374 to give him 945 in two games to beat the record held by happy. The offensive unit struck for scores Jerry Rhome of Tulsa at 710 yards. For the game Saturday, BYU had 496 the first three times it had the ball and then was able to coast home as the yards passing and rushing to 226 for defense had its finest hour shutting Utah. The Utes had been averaging down the Utes in a manner no one else 245.7 yards per game rushing and came has come close to this year. up with only 167 against the Cougars, In the first half, BYU had a 20-- 0 lead, Utah needed 348 yards total offense to had 286 total yards to only 29 for Utah set a school record but the Cougars despite having possession of the ball for even denied them that little bit of only a little more than 11 minutes while glory. BYU kicked off with Brent Johnson midfield line only once in the second quarter and twice in the third period booting the ball into the end zone and with their deepest penetration getting after three plays Utah was still on the 20 and forced to punt with BYU taking to the 32 in the third period. The shutout was the first time in over on the Utah 48. On the first play the Cougars handed hiitory that BYU has beaten the Utes without giving up a point. In 1928 the the ball to end Matt Braga on a reverse and the speedy wide receiver raced two teams played to a 0 tie. The Cougar team also set another left, appeared to have a chance of school record by becoming the first breaking loose but was stopped after a team in history to win 10 games in a gain of three to the 45. Wilson then hit fullback Eric Lane with a pass for 23 season. (Cont. on Page 7) Harold Sports Editor BYU football coach La Veil Edwards stood in the center of the tiny room just off the door to the Cougars' locker room following his team's impressive 27-win over Utah Saturday accepting congratulations on the win. LaVell looked up, smiled and said: "I'm very pleased but I don't have time to think about it. We've got to get ready for San Diego State. There are few teams in the country with as good a home record as SDS has and we've got to get ready to play them there." It was the Holiday Bowl calling for Cougar sports information director Dave Scnulthess and then asking for WAC commissioner Stan Bates. The call was to inform BYU that Indiana had accepted a bid to be the guest team in the Holiday Bowl Dec. 21 against the winner of next SaturDiego State game. day's BYU-Sa- n The announcement drew a groan from some members of the press and a couple acted outright Later, when the news went out from public address announcer Ken-nKartchner, there were some boos from the fans and many of the BYU players expressed disappointment. er I guess that was to be expected because Indiana lost to Purdue Saturday to finish its season at Everyone in these parts had been hoping for a Top 10 foe, but that wasn't to be. 7-- 4. And I don't agree with the critics. I think Indiana was an excellent choice. Don't crumble me up and throw me away. Let me explain. ' m Look, three of Indiana's four losses were to Ohio State, Michigan and Purdue. All three of those teams are in bowl games and losing to that threesome isn't any kind of disgrace. I can't remember who the other loss was to, but it certainly was to a football school. That isn't exactly shabby. I'm only guessing, but I imagine the Holiday Bowl people asked Indiana before the Purdue game, offering them the bid win or lose and Indiana accepted. In my book it was a good move. Indiana is Big 10 and that is as good as you can find anywhere. BYU or San Diego State have more to prove than the Hoosiers. Look, the bowl bids went out Saturday and the Pittsburgh's and Penn State's accepted other bids. Indiana is a good choice for the WAC bowl. Maybe you've forgotten by now because BYU is ranked 10th and is undefeated, but the Fiesta Bowl had some real strange picks when it was trying to become established and Arizona State earned its reputation by defeating those picks. Arizona State played a Missouri team that finished 5 one year and another time had Florida State with 6-- a similar record. When Oklahoma State was picked to play BYU in 1974, the Cov record boys had a worse won-lothan Indiana has this year. And everyone in Utah Valley was glad that a Big 8 team was in the and the Cougars are going to be fighting for their lives next Saturday. And consider this: Pittsburgh accepted a Fiesta Bowl bid Saturday with an opponent to be named. The Fiesta Bowl people said Saturday night that BYU is one of the teams being considered. If the Cougars should lose to San Diego State there is a good chance they will wind up in Tempe opposite the Panthers. But I think the best way to go is 11 and 0 and the Holiday Bow. The Cougars vs. the Hoosiers. It could be some kind of football game. -- st bowl. The Holiday Bowl has to grow. This is only the second year. It is going to become a real attraction but right now it can't just pick and choose like the Big Four can do. . And BYU still has to beat San Diego State before it qualifies to play Indiana.
