A group of University of Utah engineering stu-- ! dents are working on the project. The National Aeronautics and Space Administra; tion dropped the project because of budget problems, but made its data available to the U students so they could pursue the program on a smaller scale. The major purpose of the project is to demonstrate the economic and technologic feasibility of solar sailing. : The sail, presently in the design stage, will resemble a massive kite with each of its sides about 140 feet long. It will consist of a thin plastic iilnt called mylar and be coated with aluminum to icreate a reflective surface needed to harness the un'i radiation. Dr. Gary Flandro, professor of mechanical Engineering, and Dr. William L, Van Moorhem, assistant research professor of mechanical engineer-ta- i , are directing the project. I Light reflecting off its aluminum-coate- d surface .literally would push the sail through space, says Flandro, who previously conducted solar sail Research as a consultant to NASA at the Jet Propulsion Laboratory in California. "Once they are placed in orbit, they could be kite-shape- d flown just like a sailing ship. They would use radiation from the sun, just as a sailing ship uses the wind, to power their way through space," says Flandro. Only small amounts of power would be enneeded to travel through an atmosphere-fre- e vironment. More than 30 engineering students, under the direction of John Pande, a senior in mechanical engineering, are involved in the demonstration project. Pande says solar sails could play a significant role in the deployment of solar power satellites, communication satellites and space stations. "This will be the first opportunity not only to demonstrate solar sailing but also to apply new toward technology the construction and maneuverability of very large structures in space, with an emphasis on solar power stations," says Pande. A 910,000 donation from the Utah chapter of the American Institute of Aeronautics and Astronautics and the World Space Foundation spurred the project That money will purchase five cubic feet of space on the 1981 shuttle, which will orbit 130 miles above the Earth. Flandro says personnel need to solve several engineering and design problems before actual construction of the sail begins. But he says he has no doubts about its technological feasibility. t Educators Try For Excellence Westminster Anticipates Solving Money Trouble A,eyer To Jsu Af LOGAN - - A former Idahoan, who is now chancellor of the University of California at Davis, will speak at ceremonies to inaugurate the new president of Utah I State University. C. David Cornell, who has headed the school since early September, told students and faculty in a address Thursday that the school still faces problems but is beginning to solve them. Westminster, which cut out its athletic program last year, raised tuig tion, and began an emergency drive last year, still needs $3.5 million this year to repay borrowed money, Cornell said.
