Glass is a substance made by fusing (melting together) certain materials, and then cooling the mixture so that the atoms arrange themselves in an unorganized pattern. All kinds of glass are made this way by using different amounts of the same materials. The most important of the materials for making glass are: sand (silica), soda, limestone, borax, bork acid, magnesium oxide, and lead oxide. All kinds of glasses are made Ly six basic operations: mixing and melting, blowing, pressing, rolling, casting, and drawing. The raw materials are stored in huge bins or silos at the glass factory. They are carefully measured and are then mechanically mixed into a "batch." Cullet (broken glass of the same formula) is added to the batch to speed melting. The batch is fed automatically and continuously into the furnace. In the melting end of the furnace the glass is bathed in jets of flame which shoot from either side to keep an even melting temperature. As the glass flows at lower temperatures, the bubbles are removed, and the glass is ready for forming. In other words, it is already glass, and now it is formed into one type or another. Blowing machines can shape the glass into such things as bottles or electric bulbs. Pressing machines can make glas? into table and ovenware, fuse plugs, and many other products. Drawing glass is done when the glass is molten. It can be drawn out into long tubes, rods, or threads. Rollers can also shape glass for making plate glass, which is used for windows and mirrors. There are also many special kinds of glass that are made for different uses. NANCY TEACHER WON'T ASK THAT SAME -- lIL6 " HtM Lawrence By A. On this day in history: In 1492, Christopher Columbus discovered the New World known as "America." The first landing is believed to have been made in the Bahamas, southeast of what now is Florida. In 1960, Soviet Premier Nikita Khrushchev removed one of his shoes and pounded on his desk with it during a speech before the United Nations. General Assembly President Frederick Boland lost his Irish temper and split his gavel trying To restore order. In 1973, President Nixon nominated House Minority Leader Gerald Ford for the vice presidency to replace Spiro Agnew who resigned two days earlier. In 1976, swine flu inoculations were halted in nine states after three persons died shortly after taking the shots. A thought for the day: American President Franklin D. Roosevelt said, "There is nothing I love as much as a good fight." Recharge Battery MENDOTA HEIGHTS, Minn. (UPI) If your car battery goes dead, check the car's electrical system. It could save you the cost of a new battery, says Tony Sabatino, a battery manufacturing executive. Malfunctioning of the alternator, regulator or starter could I discharge the battery. "In that case, you don't need a new battery, only a recharge," he said. Sabatino is president and general manager of the automotive battery division of Gould Inc.
