October THE 12. 1978 Clavicordist to Give Recital Internationally acclaimed keyboard artist Joan Benson will perform a clavichord and fortepiano recital at Brigham Young University next Thursday at 8 p.m. The concert, part of the Lyceum series sponsored by BYU's Music Department, will be held in the Harris Fine Arts Center Madsen Recital Hall. Tickets for the event can be obtained from the Music Ticket Office in the Harris Fine Arts Center. Ms. Benson's concert will be performed on her original Broadwood grand pianoforte, built in 1795, and her clavichord built recently by Jacobus Verwolf of Holland. The recital will include "Das Glocknung," by Georg Wagenseil (clavichord), "Fantasia II," by Carl Philipp Emanuel Bach and "Fantasia in D minor, K. 397," by Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart (pianoforte). Formerly a member of the music faculty at Stanford University, Ms. Benson has recently joined the School of Music at the University of Oregon. After studying with Edwin Fischer, she studied clavichord extensively in Europe and later worked with Jorg Demus and Paul Badura-Skod8. a. New Developments at She recently completed a tour of Europe during which she traveled to many countries and performed on the outstanding clavichords throughout the continent. Her tour began at Oxford University in Great Britain. During the past three years she has appeared in festivals across the U.S., both as a recitalist and as a soloist with many orchestras. She has given concerts and lectures in Boston. New York. Chicago, Minneapolis, Washington. D C. and many other major cities. She has also performed on newly restored or acquired museum instruments at Yale and the Boston Museum of Fine Arts. In addition, she has given recitals at numerous universities, including Princeton, Brandeis and the University of Indiana at Bloomington. Recently, Ms. Benson has been featured on CBC's "Mostly Music," Washington's "Luncheon at the Kennedy Center" and on national radio programs t. She has recorded a program of Carl P. E. Bach's music on the clavichord and her 1795 pianoforte which has recently been released by Orion records. A Si. coast-to-coas- v i WORLD-RENOWNE- clavichordist D Joan Repertory Dance Theatre is presently in Ohio for five weeks on a special National Endowment for the Arts long term residency grant. They will be performing and teaching in several Ohio communities, including Ashtabula, Cleveland, Warren, and Painesville. The residency is a combination of classes, workshops, and concerts for all ages. Some of the more unusual classes will be a movement for athletes class, a movement for actors class, a parent and child class, and a movement class for a Painesville kindergarten class. The company returns from Ohio on October 28 to begin preparation for the Nov. 10 & 11 "Tribute to Virginia Tanner" performances in the Capitol Theatre. Donna Turner Smith, internationally known American concert pianist, is arriving in Provo to rehearse with the Utah Valley Symphony under the baton of its new Conductor and Musical Director Ralph G. Laycock. She will perform the Rachmeninoff Concerto No. 2 in C Minor at the 1978-7- 9 season's opening concert Wednesday in the Provo Tabernacle. Ms. Smith recently returned from a European Concert Tour playing in London, Finland, Sweden and Germany. She has been soloist, four times with the San Francisco Symphony conducted by Arthur Fieldler and Enrique Jorda. Lisa, Andrea and Brian attend school in Provo and Stephanie is at San Diego State. The Smith's home is in Claremont. Active in the LDS Church Ms. Smith has held many positions including Relief Society president, Palo Alto Stake music director, chorister, dance director, cultural refinement leader and has toured extensively with BYU Education Week tours as recitalist and lecturer to New York, Michigan and Washington, D.C. She at present directs the Claremont, California ward choir. Currently she is a member of the teaching piano faculty at the University of California at Riverside. Following her studies at Pomona College and De Paul University she studied in New York with Muriel Kerr, at Mills College with Alexander Libermann and in Luzern and Zurich, Switzerland with Geza Anda. Among a long list of special honors she has received was a scholarship for study with Rosina Lhevinne at Los Angeles Conservatory. Donna Turner Smith has played in every major U.S. city and with many of the major U.S. and European symphonys as well as being a popular TV and radio performer. She returns to Provo to play with the Utah Valley Symphony because of her special friendship with Dr. Glenn R. Williams, Dr. Ralph G. Laycock and many of the most prominent Utah musicians. members rf RDT since 1966, have been coordinators for the chosen company. Their function is to give some coordination and guidance in the artistic decisions of the company, and be responsible for the artistic growth of the company. The company welcomed two new male dancers this fall, Tom Evans, from Denver, and Bill Spencer, from California. Mr. Evans received a dance scholarship and foundation grant to receive his B.A. in dance at the University of Colorado, and was a member of the Nancy Spanier Dance Company. He has studied with Rudy Perez, and Larry Boyette of Ballet Arts in Denver. Mr. Spencer came to RDT from the California Ballet Company. He previously danced with the San Diego Ballet Company.
