Show fage HERALD, Provo, Utah, Thursday, October 12-- THE Orem Netters Shine in Region Meet first ? i 12. 1978 saaaaaaaaaaaajajaaMejaajasjsBaaaaajjs Pat Edwards Column Bv PAT EDWARDS The Agony and Ecstasy by Irving Stone is about the life of Michelangelo. That title would be appropriate for describing the emotions of those who participate in or who are involved in athletics. Their emotions are like a yoyo. Wednesday night the Dodgers experienced the high's of the yoyo string. When the series is over they may be at the low end. Because of the highs and lows in sports it's nice to develop a stabilizing factor. One such factor is humor. A sense of humor is nice to have in any profession, but especially in sports. Following are s few true humorous instances that have, happened in SALT LAKE CITY Three Orem girls earned places, another two took second and two finished third in the Region Two state qualifying tennis tournament Wednesday. The tournament was not scored since a region champion was crowned at the competition of the dual meet season. Brighton won that title with a 0 record. SALT LAKE CITY The Salt Lake Golden Eagles will open their Central Hockey League season Friday night, when they meet the Dallas Blackhawks in a renewal of a bitter rivalry over the past several years. will be at 7:30 The opening face-of- f p.m. in the Salt Palace. The same two teams will battle it out again Saturday in the Salt Palace, starting at 7:30 p.m. Coach Evans, who was at the helm when the Golden Eagles won the 1974-7- 5 season championship and the Adams Cup, will return to guide the Big Birds again much to the satisfaction of Utah's hockey faithful. (40) in 4 Blues Stop Red Wings in Opener By United Press International Rogie Vachon knows his opening per- formance wasn't exactly what the Detroit Red Wings had in mind when they risked their pocketbooks and future to sign him as a free agent. "I'm just going to have to get myself thinking that I'm going to do it," the diminutive netminder said Wednesday night, after allowing five goals on 14 shots in a 54 loss to the St. Louis Blues, his first game since joining the Red Wing. ' "It's a new town," Vachon said. "I guess I want to do so well ... I'm trying very hard to have a good start. I felt really good before the game. I didn't feel nervous." Yet the Blues, rated perhaps the weakest franchise in the league, beat him at home on a late goal by center Garry Unger. "The fellas played their hearts out just like they played against Montreal in the playoffs last spring," snapped losing Coach Bobby Krpmm. "The dif ference was in the nets. Kromm said he would "have to consider it after tonight" when asked if he might abandon Vachon after one outing and switch to either Jim Rutherford or Ron Low Saturday night when Detroit hosts Philadelphia. In other opening games Wednesday night, Chicago and Atlanta skated to a tie, Toronto shaded Pittsburgh, Montreal defeated Minnesota, 52, Vancouver blasted Colorado, and 4-- 4 because of the new league rule against freezing the puck. Walt McKechnie scored the other Toronto goal, which turned out to be the winner. 3-- 8-- 2, con- it ? r I onange transmission over Minnesota as the "Stars played their first game since merging with Cleveland. Canucks 8, Rockies 2: Rookie Thorn Gradin and Hilliard Graves scored two goals apiece to pace Vancouver over Colorado. Ron Delorme and Joe Contini scored for the Rockies. Capitals 4, Kings 2: Bob Girard, Pete Scamurra, Gerry Meehan and Tom Rowe scored for Washington in the debut of Coach Danny Belisle, who took over for Tommy McVie Monday. Butch Goring and Danto send the puck into the corner ny Grant scored for the Kings. became so frustrated because the other team had the ball that he got up and ran onto the field to make the tackle. In the heat of a game situation it's sometimes possible to lose direction on the field. In high school a running back eluded some tacklers. In doing so he got twisted around. He ran the opposite direction of what he should have done, and scored a touchdown for the opposing team. The same thing can happen in basketball. A player can run down the floor and make a basket for the other team. I guess the most humorous things about sports is that those who participate in them are either heros or bums. The classification they fall under depends upon if they've won or lost a game. t Canadiens 5, North Stars 2: Single tallies by Yvan Cournoyer, Larry Robinson, Rejean Houle, Mario Tremblay and Bob Gainey led Montreal Washington downed Los Angeles, Flames 4, Black Hawks 4: Bobby Orr returned to the Chicago lineup after missing most of the last three years, but Bob MacMillan and Guy Chouinard stole the spotlight with d goals that gave Atlanta the tie. Maple Leafs 3, Penguins 2: Darryl Sittler fired his second goal of the game into an empty net after Pittsburgh goalie Denis Herron was forced team scored, she looked at me like I was a dumbell and said, it's our turn to get the ball! " Back east a football team was being beaten badly. Every time the opposing team would get the ball, it would score. A reserve player sitting on the bench gratulating everyone at the football locker room. He was zealous in his praise and when a large young man walked by him he congratulated him on what a great game he'd played. The young man looked at him and told him that he didn't play in the game because he was redshirting. It took mother a while to learn a little bit about football. I'll never forget the time she jumped up and clapped after the opposing team had made a touchdown. I was sitting by her and she was sitting in a group of BYU fans. I couldn't believe her actions. When I questioned her about being happy when the opposing 1 Eagles Host Dallas Club - PAT EDWARDS night football during halftime. they will present film clips showing humorous bloopers that occurred during games played the previous week. Last Saturday at the Colorado State game a humorous thing happened. When Colorado State scored its first touchdown, the cheerleaders shot off a cannon. A short time later it was announced that BYU had lost. They shot off the cannon twice! A fan was so thrilled about a Joannie Ridd and Sonja Mann of Brighton defeated Chris Braithwaite and Sherrie Kaye Holdaway of Orem 3 to win the number one doubles crown. The two teams played three times with Ridd and Mann winning the first match Braithwaite and Holdaway winning the second and Ridd and Mann winning the final match. Finishing third for Orem were Cristy Gleave in number two singles and Diana Bean in number three singles. They and the other third place finishers will play the third place finishers from Region Three for state tournament berths today. , Unofficially Orem would have won the tournament.
