Show Free Press - Wednesday, December 12, 1984 - Page 10 t-.p- 1 I Pioneers look good in Orem, Timpview losses After jumping off to a 0 mark in basketball contests the against Tooele County teams, Lehi Pioneers decided to stay in Utah County last week and found the competition a lot tougher as they and lost at home to Orem, traveled to Timpview for a loss. 2-- pre-seas- 44-3- 72-6- 5 Both match ups were close, as the scores indicate, but Lehi was hampered because of height up front, and lost four players via foul penalties in an attempt to control the bigger Tigers and Thun-derbird- s. Orem was never able to breathe easy, as the Pioneers stayed within striking distance throughout the lead at the end of game. A the first quarter held up for Orem, as both teams scored 13 points in the second period, Lehi scored 12 to Orem's 11 in the third, and then the Tigers relied on foul shooting in the final canto for 8 points to Lehi's 4. two-poi- Lehi could not "buy" a field goal in the final period and scored only on four of six free throws after the 6 deficit at the end of three. 35-3- Fouls were fairly even with Lehi committing 20 and Orem 17. The difference in the contest seemed to be from the charity stripe as Orem hit 16 of 21 compared to Lehi's 7 of 14. slow-dow- four-corn- Kevin Southwick, just back from a serious infection, was not at full strength, but still managed to get six points on two from the field and two of four from the line. Matt Calton, tall but young, had one field goal and ended up with two points. He also had four fouls. Southwick fouled out in the fourth quarter. ; If Chris Price scored two or three free throws for his night's work, and Gordon Turner one free throw. As a team they shot only 50 percent from the line. At Timpview the Pioneers spotted the Thunderbirds 12 in the first quarter, which held up through the half, but made a run at the home team with a second-hal- f surge and moved within seven at the final buzzer. Lehi hit on three field goals and two of two free throws in the first period to trail 20-- 8 while Timpview and two from had nine the line. Southwick seemed to have made full recovery by Friday as he lead the team with 9 of 13 from the field for 69 percent and had 4 of 4 from the stripe. He grabbed 17 rebounds to 19 for the entire Timpview squad and was responsible for numerous blocked shots, even though he was outsized by four inches. Lott did his usual commendable job with six from the field and two of three from the line for 14. Smith was the other Pioneer in double figures with 10 on four from the field and 2 of 2 from the charity stripe. Glathar was held to one field goal in each quarter. As a team the Pioneers hit 53 percent of their field goals and 81 percent from the free throw line. Although smaller than the home floor The Pioneers, had 16 field goals in n contest as Coach Ken the Robinson tried to get the Tigers out of their zone. It was quite effective for the home crew with Greg Glathar and Bryan Smith driving off the offense. Wade Lott was deadly from the corner and inside with five field goals and 12 total points to lead all scorers on the floor. Glathar and Smith each had 8 on four field goals. Thunderbirds, they outrebounded them 27 to 19. In the final period Lehi scored eight field goals to three for Timpview, but were forced to foul for the ball and gave up eight of 14 free throws while earning the opportunity for only four, of which they made two. The team left Wednesday morning for Farmington, N.M. for their annual tournament. They will play Thursday, Friday and Saturday and return to Lehi on Sunday, with a home game scheduled against Mountain View Friday, Dec. 21. Coach Ken Robinson is pleased with Jthjj. progress- and discipline of the players and expects them to represent the school and community well during the season which will begin after the Christmas break as they host Spanish Fork on Dec. 28. - s Jr. Jazz coaches needed r Basketball coaches for the newly formed Lehi Jr. Jazz league are seriously needed, according to recreation director Tracy Wilson.
