Show County's largest Free Press Wednesday, December Lehi hosts chess tournament The Christmas season is a happy one for most people, but the residents of Larsens Nursing Home could spend a lonely holiday unless people lend their talents to cheer up the residents there. The Yuletide holiday is one of the most joyous and family-oriente- d times of the year; but for patients at Larsens Nursing Home who have no family support, it could be the lonliest season. Larsens Nursing Home, a small facility where 28 residents live, is all ready for Christmas, according to Ann Rhodes, Recreation Director. "We have decorated, turned up the Christmas music, and are anxiously waiting to hear from Santa to say when he will visit," she says. to Ann, the But, according holidays would be much more meaningful if others would share their talents with the ladies at the rest home. would "We appreciate any program that could lend a special Christmas spirit. There were 52 participants from Utah and Salt Lake Counties involved in the competition. Tournament director, Jim Howe, was extremely plesed with the large toumout of chess enthusiasts. Each contestant played three games with the championship being e decided by a playoff that involved speed clocks where every move was timed to the second. According to Howe, the tournament was a sight to behold. "The contestants were sweating it out. It was so quiet you could almost hear their concentration," Howe said. The first place trophy was won by Lehi High School senior, Phil Warner. A sophomore from Lehi, David Walker, took fourth. The coveted Family Trophy was won by Danny, Billy and Michael Loveridge, sons of Mr. and Mrs. Brent Loveridge. Most families have traditions that include a party or program. Why not share that family spirit with the elderly patients at Larsens Nursing Home? Your generosity of time and talents would make the Christmas season a memorable occasion, not only for the patients, but for you as well. The residents enjoy having people bring in small pets for short visits of 15 to 20 minutes, so they can pet and touch them. "Animals have a very good therapeutic effect on older people," Rhodes says. "Many of them have had pets of their own in the past, and recalling their own experiences is very exciting for them." Remember, sharing, in any way, is the very essence and spirit of Christmas. -- Lehi woman dies in Sunday shooting -- y Family trophy winners at the Lehi Chess Tournament were (1 to r) Michael Loveridge, 9, Second Place Winner in the Fourth Grade, William Loveridge, 10, Fifth Place Winner in the Fifth Grade, and Daniel Loveridge, 10, First Place Winner in the Fifth Grade.
