Actually all the casinos are incredibly similar in their layout and what they have to offer. When in doubt, head for the Stateline. SOUTH: Since we're talking strictly out of state adventures here, Southern Utah is out of the question. Taking a road trip and not leaving Zion is totally out of the question. , With that in mind, Las Vegas is the solution. If Wendover is little league, and it is, Vegas is definitely big time. It doesn't matter when you leave because Las Vegas never comes close to closing. Everybody knows what to check out in the area of the major casinos on the strip. A part of the city is are located the older casinos right downtown. Many of there, such as The Mint, The Golden Nugget and The Silver Spur. The major highlight of Las Vegas is Bob Stupak's "Vegas World." If one really had the inclination to get bold, the "fun" package offered by the "Polish Maverick" himself. It's not everyday that one gets the opportunity to receive a photograph taken next to a million dollars in ? cold, hard cash. v k .As long as yotf re heading to Vegas, the next logical stop is Los Angeles. It is worth the entire drive to L. A. just to stop at Tommy s. Nothing will pick up your spirits like a Tommy's burger and chili dog for breakfast. The best option to sample Tommy's fine cuisine in the original stand at the corner of Beverly and Rampart in South Hollywood. EAST: When you're talking about sleazy, dive towns, Evanston comes quickly to mind. The small Wyoming border town does have its advantages though. The foremost positive point is Evanston's proximity to Salt Lake. Less than two hours is what is required to make the run. Though it is a pleasant drive, the weather can turn nasty very quickly this time of year so beware and be prepared. Evanston really can't offer that much in terms of great entertainment, so, you may ask, why make the effort to go. The atmosphere is the main reason. Dancing in the Cowboy Casino is an experience that can't be duplicated in Utah. The dance hall is faintly reminiscent of Urban Cowboy, except you'll have to do without the mechanical horse. One band that is worth the drive is Catfish Charlie. "Cat" and his band reallv0 ect the W joint jumping. In order to maintain one's sanity, it sometimes becomes apparent that a act is just the thing to do. A road trip becomes the perfect plan. The upcoming Christmas break will provide the perfect opportunity for many to "hit the road." In order to assure a true "road trip," the destination must be somewhere out of state. This is truly not as difficult as it may sound. In fact, the problem of which way to bead is really quite simple. Basically, from Salt Lake, you can have fun in four semi-irratio- nal directions. NORTH: Idaho may not seem like the place to be during Christmas, or any other time for that matter, but that is not the case for the Sun m area. Skiing is what the area is famous for, but it is certainly not the only diversion. "Hanging out is another viable alternative. The Lodge at Sun Valley is a prime example of less-visit- Valley-Ketchu- a choice area to relax and enjoy one's self. Ketchum is where most of the nightlife happens. A stop at Louie's is a must. The pizza isn't really all that spectacular, though it is pretty good, but everyone eats -there and it has its own charm, sf: ; ' : is another one of Ketchum's appeals. A veritable slew of interesting drinking establishments can be found along the main drag, just before the turnoff to Sun Valley. Whiskey Jacques is a great diversion. Staying in Sun Valley tends to be more than a bit expensive, but there is an alternative. The "quaint" little town of Twin Falls is only little more than an hour away from Sun Valley, and offers a Motel 6. What a bonus. At a fairly rapid pace, the trip to Idaho from Salt Lake will take little more than four hours. WEST: Heading this way out of Salt Lake can only mean one thing that's right 'Dover. Wendover is the perfect opportunity for the spur of the moment trip. Only about two hours of driving time separates one from Nevada. Still, it is hard to conceive of Wendover really being in Nevada. It only seems to be a sleazy town that happens to have casinos all over the place. Truly, the casinos are the only "charm" Wendover has. If you don't feel like losing some cash, Wendover's not the place to shoot for. The Stateline casino is the oldest around, though it has been recently remodeled. Edmund Gwenn's performance as Kris Kringle in Miracle on 34th Street will convince anyone of Santa Claus's cxi stance. Natalie Wood is also excellent in the same film. There are several film versions of the second most popular Christmas story: Dickens' ! Christmas Carol. The British version made in 195 1 is by far the best. Alistair Sim plays Scrooge with a realistic edge. He is absolutely nasty to begin with, but he sure is likable at the end. This version is also the closest to the story. Meet Me is St. Louis is not really a Christmas movie, as much as a depiction of the seasons, but its Christmas scenes catch the yuletide spirit as well as any film I know. The film features Judy Garland. Could anyone ask for more? Curse of the Cat People is an offbeat fantasy film by Val Lewton who produced sensitive and shadowy films that examined human behavior more closely than most. This film is about a lonely whose dead mother returns in ghost form to help her adjust to life. Most of the film takes place during Christmas and it exudes love and compassion. I recommend the film to anyone who is looking for something a little different for Christmas. Tape Head Company is the only video store I know that has a copy of it. With the exception of It s a Wonderful Life, few of the great Christmas movies will appear on local TV station this December. For film buffs who can't get through the season without seeing Natalie Wood sitting on Kris Kringle's knee or Judy Garland singing "Have Yourself a Merry Little Christmas," video tapes offer solace to lonely hearts. Most of the great classics are available on video tape, as well as a couple of odd balls for the adventurous. The two most popular and probably the best Christmas movies are It s a Wonderful Life and Miracle on 34th Street. Both films date from the mid '40s and feature excellent $20,000 Scholarships: A Valuable Scholarship. A Valuable Challenge.
