Show I Tbe Dally Utah contests th5s month PIsnty off homa home the break. Actually that number MarkSaal five by Chronicle staff About the only sporting events roost students associate with the Christmas break are die traditional football bowl games. And so, most students staying here for the holidays spend most of the break downing egg nog and other liquids while languishing in front of the TV set. But if students are willing to get up out of that easy chair there are plenty of sporting events going on in townand contrary to popular belief, watching the tube is not the next best thing to being there. Yes, hockey is alive and well in Salt Lake Gty at least for another year and the Golden Eagles are certainly making an impact in their first year as a member of the International Hockey League. Few sports rival the speed and excitement of the 'Tights on ice." Area fans were clamoring to save the endangered Eagles, and now that they're around for another year it might be a good idea to see the vanishing breed before it becomes extinct. The Eagles will be at home six times during the holiday break, meeting three teams this month. On Friday and Saturday evening the Eagles have games with Toledo. Then on Dec. 17 the club hosts Kalamazoo, and again the 19th. Milwaukee will be in town for contests on Dec. 27 and 29. Ticket prices for games are $6, $7 and $8, and all seats arc reserved. All home games begin at 7:30 p.m. If leaving that cozy fireplace at home to travel through blinding snow to see a game played on ice sounds a little too chilly, then there is always NBA basketball. The Jazz' recent success has made going to games a little more inviting, even if the increase in ticket prices doesn't make the event any easier on the pocketbook. Prices this year are $22.50, $17.50, $12.50, $10 and, for those on a tight budget, $5, and all seats are reserved. Students receive a 30 percent discount, though, on all tickets. But for that money, fans are usually treated to an exciting game. The one drawback is that the Jazz play only games during computer 45-seco- nd rt play-by-pl- ay Kalamazoo game) the Runnin' Utes will welcome this time. Saturday the women host a tussle with Northern Arizona. On Dec. 15 the Utes play Idaho State. Both games are at 7:30 p.m. The women will play one other home game during the month, a New Year's Eve contest with Oregon. Tbe best part about it is the games are free to students with valid ID cards, and a guest pass is usually no more than $4. Top of the Christmas list is Runnin' Ute basketball.
