Since 1892, when The Nutcracker was first presented in St. Petersbcrg, audiences have been captivated by Clara's dream fantasy. The ballet is arranged in two acts. The first is set in the real world, and the journey through the magical kingdom begins in the second. In the home of Dr. Stahlbam, the children are readying themselves for a Christmas Eve party. Herr Drosselmeyer, Clara's godfather and a maker of magical moving toys, stops by with his nephew to present gifts to the children. Clara's gift is a nutcracker. She is delighted with the gift, but Fritz, her brother, jealous of Clara's happiness, grabs the doll and breaks it. Drosselmeyer attempts to repair it. After the party Clara creeps downstairs to retrieve die broken nutcracker, then returns to her bed. Drosselmeyer enters, taking the doll from Clara, repairs it and returns it to her arms. Suddenly the lights on the Christmas tree flash, "waking" Clara. She begins her flight into fantasy as the Mouse King appears and the fight between the soldiers and the mice begin. The e, Nutcracker Prince, now joins the is being battle the that fight. Spanish dancers, Arabians, and Chinese dancers whirl across the stage but most memorable is the Grand Pas de Derc of the Sugar Plum Fairy and her Cavalier. Clara bids the fantasy characters farewell and returns to the real world, knowing that she can return to the magical kingdom only in ber dreams.
