Wasatch Dr. South Oaden ft WL M-T- 1 1 k I f fc 1 d there was a great deal of public controversy about vaccine reactions, especially those associated with DTP. Vaccines are some of the safest and most effective medicines available, yet all medicines are associated with side effects. Most of the side effects associated with vaccines are mild such as fever, a sore arm or leg where the shot was given, a rash, or fussiness. On rare occasions the side effects are more serious. The contro In the 1970s, Preventative Dentistry Nitrous Oxide Head Phones Reconstructive and Cosmetics (Crowns, Veneers, Fillings, Bleaching) Bridges, Tooth-colore- d Root Canal Treatments (East across from Wilshire Theater) Tetanus is sometimes called lockjaw. The bacteria are found in the soil and enter the body through deep wounds. The symptoms of lockjaw are headache, irritability, and muscular stiffness. The muscles of the jaw, neck, and limbs become locked in spasm and seizures may result, leading to heart failure or suffocation . Pertussis, also known as whooping cough, starts with symptoms like a common cold, i.e. runny nose, fever, and cough. The cough increases in severity and occurs in prolonged "whooping sounds" spasms with between spasms. Severe cases can result in seizures, pneumonia, brain damage and death. All of these diseases can be prevented or made less severe through routine childhood immunization programs. GENTLE, PROFESSIONAL FAMILY CARE i n doctor is WE TAKE TRADES - RtUO FOR OR NOTt versy around these side effects led to a dramatic decline in immunization rates in children in the U.S. DTaP was developed in an attempt to create a safer vaccine with fewer side effects. The new formulation contains an inactive form of the pertussis toxin. It was first available in 1991 to be given as the fourth and fifth booster to children above age 1 S months. These DTaP boosters were licensed for use after the child received three doses of the older whole-cel- l pertussis found in the different preparations of the DTP vaccine. On December 30, 1996, the Food and Drug Administration licensed the first preparation of the DTaP for all five doses of the diphtheria, tetanus, pertussis series. It can now be given to children at the 2 month, 4 month, 6 month, 18 month and the 5 year check-up- . -- Studies have shown the new vaccine to be effective and safe. Children who received the new vaccine experience significantly fewer side effects including less fever, site swelling, sleepiness, and fretfulness. Combination vaccines have been developed in the past to decrease the number of shots that are given to children during a single visit. At this time, the new DTaP, to be used for the series, comes only as a single agent requiring a separate shot from the other immunizations. There is research underway to develop combination vaccines, which will include the new DTaP. lopefully, these vaccines will be available in the near future. five-pa- zzjl J 1 I INFORMATION: rt I Immunizing your children is a key component to having them grow up healthy and strong.
