Charles Freeman where informaanywhere from one to 1,000 tion can be downloaded. In addition to being a telecommunication information repository, Tucker notes FAMNET is also a great quality tool. "I recently used it as a bench marking tool to contact other Family Resource offices to get copies of their newsletters," said Tucker. Although the majority of the members in the 419th are not aware of the magnitude of information available on FAMNET, members of the wing's Family Readiness Office are optimistic this news service will be a welcome benefit to reservists, especially during deployments and TDYs. Chat rooms are also available that permit family members to stay in contact easily and at no cost regardless of where they are deployed. "It's a tool we need to use and exploit Hopefully, members will use it to the full extent of its realm," said Tucker. Available since January, FAMNET (Family Network) Telecommunications is an innovative means of providing information worldwide that can benefit reserve members. "In a nutshell ifs a major resource tool that provides information on a variety of subjects," said SSgt Mark Tucker, 419th family resource specialist In a matter of minutes information can be downloaded on hundreds of topics from "child abuse" to "how to buy meat" The only requirement is that reserve members schedule appointments through the Family Readiness Office. Charles Freeman 419th FW Public Affairs Office by SSgt. Jim Papasadero 419th FW Public Affairs Office The unit and organizational patches are back! According to a recent Air Force Instruction all personnel must have these new patches on their Battle Dress Uniform (BDU) by Oct. 1, 1997. CMSgt. Marva Harper, 419th Senior Enlisted Advisor, says enlisted members can obtain the patches in their orderly rooms. Each member receives a total of five Air Combat Command patches and five 419th Fighter Wing patches, four for their BDUs and one for a field jacket. Two squadrons won't wear the ACC patch, according to Harper. The 67th Aerial Port Squadron will wear the Air Mobility Materiel Command patch and the 419th Combat Logistics Support Squadron will wear the Air Force Materiel Command patch. The gaining command patches are now in the orderly rooms. The 419th FW patches are on order and should be available any day, says Harper. Officers are responsible for their own sew on of new patches. Enlisted members will not have to pay for sew on. Dang's Tailor Shop, just outside the South Gate, has the contract and will sew patches on until Sept 30, 1997. After Sept 30 enlisted members will pay for their own sew on. Command emblems will be placed on the right breast pocket and unit emblems will be placed on the left breast pocket Refer to chapter 5 of AFI for further instructions. 36-29- AFRC needs specialists ROBINS AFB, Ga. (AFRCNS) Air Force Reserve Command is looking for intelligence and language specialist to help with the war on drugs. Tour locations are open in the States and overseas, working with different law enforcement agencies. To help reservists apply for a tour, the counterdrug support division in Headquarters AFRC has established a web page. Interested people can log onto the web page at WWW.AFRES AF.MIL.HQDODOU. After following instructions, it will take two to three days for Headquarters AFRC to verify an applicant's eligibility and issue a passcode. Reservists who do not have access to a computer can contact HQ AFRCDOU by telephone, either toll free or via the Digital Switched Network. MSgt. George F. Gadbois, who handles overseas requests, is available by dialing or DSN Becky Ext. Jenkins, the point of contact for stateExt. side tours, is at 497-119- or DSN 497-118- 5. 4. When it comes to education, the windows of opportunity couldn't be open any wider for reservists in the 419th Fighter Wing. When it comes tJ education and training, MSgt. Brent Boehme is very comfortable with the subject Not surprising for someone who has been in the wing's Education and Training Office for about 16 years. Currently the NCOIC, Boehme says there are probably a lot of reservists unaware of the many educational benefits available to them or their spouses. "Some things we offer just don't get that much publicity," explained Boehme. Although the office has a strong emphasis on training, the educational includes administering aspect Community College of the Air Force programs (CCAF), civilian education counseling, the Reserve Montgomery G.I. Bill program, and the Defense Activities NonTradifional Education Services (DANTES) testing program. The DANTES and College Level Examination Program are probably some of the more well known tests, but there are several other lesser known tests available to members that often get the overlooked. Those include: General Requirements Exam, the Scholastic Aptitude Test, and a long list of licensing exams that are required for many fields such as plumbing, electrical, automotive, heating and air conditioning and many other vocations. For those reservists contemplating a CCAF degree, Boehme says it's still a good thing to have. "It's desirable to have for a number of reasons including said promotional opportunities," People who do not make themselves available to the educational opportunities are shorting themselves. MSgt. Brent Boehme NCOIC education and training r 11 Boehme. The degree is unique in the fact it combines technical credits, usually obtained from military schools, with general education credits earned from civilian schools. The choice is yours, but the staff in the wing's Education and Training Office invite reservists to stop by and get up to speed on all the options. There is an increasing number of educational benefits available to spouses as well. "The atmosphere in the 419th doesn't encourage complacency," said Boehme. "People who do not make themselves available to the educational opportunities are shorting themselves." For more information, contact the 419th Education and Training Office at 775-260- 8. |
