According to the National Coalition Against Domestic Violence, in at least one-half of wife-abusing families, the children are battered as well. They also estimate that of the children who witness domestic violence, 60 percent per-cent of the boys eventually become batterers and 50 percent of the girls become victims. If you suspect a friend or neighbor is suffering from domestic abuse, you may be wondering "What Can I Do to Help?" According to Durelle Price, a crisis counselor for the YWCA Domestic . Violence Program, "as a friend, if you know it's happening, hap-pening, don't brush it under the rug. If you hear of domestic violence call the police. If you see domestic violence call the police." For those who suspect a friend is suffering from abuse, but don't know how to ask, Durelle suggests simply asking "Is someone hurting you?" Victims are often afraid to seek out local resources for help and information. As a friend, you may offer to gather brochures and information infor-mation about local resources for her. Help her set up a "safety plan." The South Valley Sanctuary, located in West Jordan, suggests victims should keep an extra set of keys, money and copies of important documents (ID, birth certificate, address book, Social Security card, work permits, green card, insurance papers, driver's license, school and vaccination vaccina-tion records, etc.) with a friend or family member.
