Timpview's a good team. We went errorless error-less as we shut them out. We left runners on base every inning, but we got the runs in when we needed to." i In the top of the first, pitcher ' Briana Gourdin accidentally beaned leadoff hjtter C.C. Francom. The became a major test of patience for the Vikings. Across seven innings of play, Gourdin struck out eight Pleasant Grove batters. She posted her first two strikeouts strike-outs in the second. Save for the second, Pleasant Grove placed runners run-ners on base every inning. Walked by Gourdin in the third, Francom scored the second Viking run on a two- out, Whitnie Winger single. The Vikings would not get their third run untill four innings later. The Thunderbirds finally got their first hit when Christy Rogers singled into left. Her single was one of only three hits that Timpview registered in the game. Pleasant Grove, on the other hand, posted six hits for the night. In the top of the seventh, Scoville bunted for the third Viking run. Gourdin shut Pleasant Grove down after that. The Vikings got revenge by letting no Thunderbirds touch first in the bottom of the inning. The American Fork game closed out the Vikings' home season. The Vikings gave Scoville a rest and threw freshman Chelsey Mikalauski. The ninth-grader ninth-grader proved she could hold her own against American Fork. The Cavemen scored a run in the top of the first, but Pleasant Grove staged a four-run rally in the bottom of the inning. Even though their opponents pulled within 4-2 in the third, the Vikings never looked back. After picking up a run in the third, Pleasant Grove scored eight runs in the fifth to cause the game to be called. The Vikings wrap up the region season tomorrow at payson. By Todd Veenker Sports Correspondent The Pleasant Grove baseball base-ball team moved two and a half steps closer to the region title this past week with two victories and a Spanish Fork loss. The Vikings defeated Payson in a close pitcher's duel 3-2 and then picked up an important 7-3 victory on Friday against Lone Peak. Thanks to the Don's loss to Payson on Friday, Pleasant Grove currently holds a game and a half lead on Spanish Fork heading into this week's finale. At Payson the Vikings opened the game with a quick one run first inning thanks to a Kory Drew double to open the game. Seth Morris collected col-lected the RBI that scored Drew. In the bottom half of the first inning, Payson evened the score with their leadoff batter. The Vikings again took the lead in the second inning with two more runs. Jayson Hatfield and Lafe Blackhurst put themselves in scoring position to start the inning and Drew drove his teammates team-mates in thanks to an important impor-tant double that gave Pleasant Grove a 3-1 lead. Those three runs turned out to be all the Vikings would need to win the game. In the bottom half of the second, Payson managed one more run but it wouldn't be enough to catch the Vikings. Russ Wall continued the impressive outing as he finished fin-ished off the Lions with five more innings of shutout baseball. base-ball. Friday afternoon Lone Peak came to town with hopes of avenging their previous previ-ous loss to the Vikings on their home field. State Rd. 756-6000 to give Lone Peak a 1-0 lead. The score remained 1-0 until the fourth inning when Sam Burgess hit a second Lone Peak home run as the visiting Knights jumped out to a 2-0 lead with Pleasant Grove unable to place a base runner through four innings of baseball. In the fifth inning Pleasant Grove broke open the flood gates as the Viking lineup took their shots at the Knight's pitching staff on their second time at the plate. Jayson Hatfield became the first Viking to make it on base thanks to an error by Lone Peak's left fielder. A double by Seth Iorg scored Hatfield and broke the Pleasant Grove scoring drought. For Lone Peak the flood followed. A throwing error later in the inning scored Iorg, tying the game at two apiece. With Russ Wall and Bridger Anderson both on base, Devin Kearns came up with a big double that scored both runners run-ners and gave the Vikings their first lead of the game. Pleasant Grove capped the inning thanks to RBIs from Phil Rogers, Hatfield and Iorg to give Pleasant Grove a 7-2 lead. Lone Peak appeared defeated after their starting pitcher had been forced from the game. But the Knights fought back in the seventh inning as they loaded the bases. But Pleasant Grove came up with the defensive stops when they needed it allowing the Knights just one run and preserving pre-serving the 7-3 victory. This week the Vikings traveled to Provo yesterday where the Bulldogs are coming com-ing off a big victory over Lone Peak. Tomorrow the regular season will come to a close with an appropriate finish with the Vikings playing host to the Spanish Fork Dons. Earlier in the season, the Vikings suffered an extra innings loss at Spanish Fork. If the Vikings can pull off the victory tomorrow, they will be the region champion outright. A loss to Spanish Fork will force a championship champi-onship tie and give the Dons the number one seed heading into the tournament because of the Don sweep of the Vikings. Game time is 4 p.m. Regardless of tomorrow's outcome, Pleasant Grove will host two games next week as the state tournament gets underway beginning Tuesday. Following the first two rounds, Ken Price Field in Murray and Lindquist field in Ogden will play host to the state tournament. t ft r-J- -r'-' riii' -"mi- - :-: i limn wii- r'- -- rrn ' H "V, - V V.'
