JOCELYN VAZQUEZ AND CHRISTOPHER LOPER Jocelyn Vazquez to marry Christopher Loper in temple Jocelyn Vazquez, daughter of Enrique and Benny Vazquez of Cagua, Puerto Rico, will marry Christopher Loper, son of Charles and Dawn Loper of Orem, on March 18, 2000 in the Mount Timpanogos Temple. A reception will be held that same day from 7 until 10 p.m. at the LDS Second West Chapel located at 665 South 200 West, Orem. The bride-to-be graduated from the Interamerican University at Writer Dean Hughes entertains Orem Women's Club March 1 brought a special program pro-gram for members and guests of the Orem Women's Club. Prelude music by Beth Tidwell set the tone for the afternoon as-hostesses as-hostesses Barbara Love, and Helen McEuen greeted the 40 members and 10 guests, i: President Adele Bliss called the meeting to order at 2:30 p.m., greeted members and guests and thanked Beth and the hostesses after which LuJean Sundberg led the group in the Pledge of Allegiance Alle-giance and Ruby Cameron read the Litany. President Bliss then instructed the corresponding secretary to send a card to Liane Foutz, mentioned men-tioned that a book will be put in the Orem Library in the name of Naomi Biggs, a member of the club who passed away last week and told the club that the Alhers sisters are trying to locate two paintings done by their father in 1971, encouraging members to contact the sisters if they have any information. She also discussed the club's support of Girls State and Kay Ballard moved that the club pay $200 to send a selected girl to Girl's State this year. The motion passed and club members will visit various high schools to see the girls who are competing. A discussion was held regarding regard-ing a Board poll considering changing the standing rules to allow those living outside of Orem to join the club. laVaun Turner moved to accept those outside the city into the club and it passed 15-5. The club is now officially open for membership beyond the boundaries of Orem. Following the business, Marilyn Stevens introduced the speaker, Dean Hughes, who teaches creative writing at BYU and has written many books. He served a mission mis-sion in the New Jersey, Morristown Mission. told of his early life and how he became a writer. After writing many books for children and teens, the told of his decision to write about fictional characters in the historical setting of WWII in "Children of the Promise." The last book of the five volume series se-ries will be available this fall. He then invited and answered questions ques-tions from the audience. He have an interesting account of his background, starting with his early years and told how he began writing. He mentioned a few of the characters and events in some of his books, all of which have been well received. Especially Espe-cially popular is the "Children of the Promise" series. An excellent dramatized abridgement of each volume on audio tape and narrated nar-rated by Hughes' son, Tom, a theater the-ater arts major, is also available. Hughes shared some thoughts and ideas about the characters in this series and how he obtained some of the background material about a period he was to young to experience firsthand. He portrays por-trays with amazing authenticity the breadth and turmoil of this major event in world history. He created characters within a fictional fic-tional family and developed their relationships with others while they endured this difficult life and death conflict with its lasting effects ef-fects on both body and soul. The books truly make you feel what the war was like and what families fami-lies went through. The audience was very anxious to know when the fifth volume would be available and were told that it is currently expected to be out in September of this year. Mr. Hughes wrote full time for many years. At the present time he is still writing ful time while also teaching at BYU. "There have been a number of inquiries from Orem but as of this date we are still looking for a representative," representa-tive," according to Diane Ritter, director of the pageant. The Mrs. Utah American Pageant Pag-eant will take place June 23 and 24, 2000 at Kingsbury Hall on the beautiful University of Utah . main campus in Salt Lake City. The contestants will compete in three categories: Personal Interview, Inter-view, Evening Gown and Swim-suit. Swim-suit. Mrs. Utah America will go on to participate in the nationally televised Mrs. American Pageant, from Hawaii, in September. Bonnie Productions', producers of the Mrs. Arizona, Mrs. Texas and Mrs. Utah America Pageants have experienced significant success suc-cess in the pageant industry. Hale Center Theater announces auditions Auditions for "M is for the Million," Mil-lion," by Jack Sharkey will be held Saturday, April 1 at the Hale Center Theater Orem. HCTO is looking for nine talented tal-ented actors to play 10 roles in this fast-paced comedy. Parts range in age from 20-60 years old.
