BYMLS ABRAMSON Brighton Touring Center Back country trekkers are urged to seek information on snow stability from the Utah Avalanche Forecast Center-but what is the center and who runs it? The forecast center is a joint project pro-ject between the United States Forest Service, which provides the raney, and the United States father Sen vce. which provides the office and access to current weather information, computers and advice. The center started six years ago and now has four full-time employees and one part-timer. The people working at the forecast center are snow professionals who ork-and probably play in snow with great earnest. They gather and assess informa-lion informa-lion concerning snowpack and EBack Country af ety mountain weather to create a forecast on possible hazards to back-country back-country travelers. It must be stressed here that the center forecasts pertain to the back country only. They do not apply to developed ski areas or mountain roads to the ski areas. The information comes from 20 to 30 mountain observers, who for the most part, work and live in the mountains. Those contributers include in-clude ski patrolmen, helicopter service ser-vice workers, local touring center guides, the Utah Department of Transportation employees, snow rangers and others. The local forecast covers the mountains from Logan to Provo, including in-cluding the Cottonwood canyons to Park City. Due to the heavy winter use of the local back country, the Forest Service Ser-vice decided in 1980 to issue a hazard evaluation for the Wasatch Mountains. Moun-tains. This forecast greatly benefits cross county skiers, snowmobilers. showshoers, winter campers, climbers and other winler sport professionals. pro-fessionals. The center receives 4.500 to 5,500 calls between .November and late April. The forecast provides backcoun-try backcoun-try users with a 60-second message. The first seconds is focused on snowpack and avalanche informa-I informa-I ion with the final :0 seconds devoted to mountain weather. Potter, racing as a J-I (for 16 to 18-year-olds) placed seventh on Saturday with a time of 2:12.87. Her teammate Michelle Healy finished 18th at 2:27.35 in the A Class (for those 19 and older). Potter was also seventh on the se cond race on Sunday, finishing in 2:14.28. She finished 10th in the first race of the day at 2: 13.64. Healy ended end-ed 19th in the first Sunday race in 2 : 28.65 and 18th in the second race at 2:32.52. ParkWest's J-II skier (14 to 15-year-olds) Jeremy Nobis finished 25th among the men on the first day and did not finish on the second day.
