Never noticed'1 You're not alone. We ran these tips once before, last July, and it became our most popular column, getting more reader requests for reprints than any other columns we've written. So in case you missed it. here it is again. t tperating systems are specialized programs most computer users never learn much about. They generally sit quietly in your computer's com-puter's memory, knowing where to ferry the commands that spreadsheets, spread-sheets, word processors and the like send to be processed. But their jargon-choked manuals reveal handy han-dy tricks just waiting for anybody w ho takes the time to try them. The richest finds are in MS DOS. PC DOS and UNIX, but CPM and the various Apple operating systems offer many of the same tricks. In this column, our examples are for PC Dos 2.1. Check the index of your "op sys" manual for your ow n commands. com-mands. Keep in mind that to use these operating svstem tricks, you can't running any program unless it by Frankly nn Peterson and Judy K Tur be lets you run DOS commands through it You'll know when you're talking right to the operating system by its on-screen hello: generally an A followed by a shaftless arrow (if your program disk is in drive A. Otherw ise, A is replaced by your active ac-tive drive's letter). How'd you like to automate the backing up of those files that are too important to lose0 Y'ou ought to do this if y ou find back-up routings too cumbersome. Y'ou can reduce it all to a single keystroke by using three little-used PC DOS features: (1) 'copy con," which lets you quickly w rite a short file at your keyboard :or "CONsole" in jargon): (2) backup," a utility program that offers of-fers several variations for automating the backup process; and ci) batch command files, through w hich you can run one or more programs pro-grams and even pass along operating instructions. (Read more about batch commands in manual. Right after that "A arrow:' your pro mpt, first type: COPY CON B EAT BACKUP Cntab right). (tab riehtA:-MSA Next hit Control" and "Z : at tne same time, then a carriage return. Control Z signals "end of file to computer.) These instructions assume that vour files are on drive C (typical in hard-disk computers) and you want them copied onto floppy flop-py disks in drive A. "Thanks to the program you just created all vou need do at the end of every dav is to (D call up your operating' system and (2) type B. The computer will automatically back up all the files you've worked on since your last backup by making copies onto disks in drive A. If you fill up one disk, the program even tells you to insert another. How many times have you wished you could pull one common piece of "data out of all your computer files? Just last week we were thinking, We've got lots of 800 numbers in our data files and would love to type tnem an out. "y " .-.cv miracle. we used one ot i v i-least-used commands, "Find. We tvped- in: FIND "800-" METASOFT.OP2 and quick as bunnv. the program typed on-screen every line in our lOMeg hard disk s word-processed files that contains the phrase "BOO-." By hitting "print screen," we captured it all onto paper. What a timesaver! "Print screen" is another hidden timesaver, available on most IBM and "compatible" keyboards just by hitting two keys. Simply turn on your printer and simultaneously strike -'shift" along with the "PrtSc" key. The printer will zip ott an exact copv of what's on-screen. It generally won't do graphics, but it does type all the letters and numbers. "Print Screen" is useful when you need some fast data from a big file and don't need a fancy printout. It can also make a paper copy of all the file names on a disk. Most folks know that if you ask for a "directory" (usually typed DIR), you get. on-screen, the name, size and last revision date of all the files on a particular disk or subdirectory of a disk. But if you have lots of files, this information flashes by too quickly to read. Few people realize how to stop the roll-by at any point: hit "Control" plus "S." Hit the space bar to start it going again. If you type: DIR P instead of DlR the roll-by will stop when the sere' is filled. Hitting the space b? displays the next screenful. r 11, instead, you type DIRW vom ii get file names in five neat col'uJ down your screen. That lets you sea five times more files at once hm-1 doesn't give dates or sizes If you want to view vour fil : alphabetical order, you can adi another little-used command "Sort," to "DIR." But you'll have to consult your manual (under "Sort", for the key to hit. because we cant give it to you. You see, although most newspapers are now typeset bv computers, those computers can't print this particular character! The authors answer questions and send a checklist of available back issues.
