"When I said I was go.ng to run for Mrs. Utah people peo-ple said I didn't have a chance because mv hair was too short. I was too old and a lot of other reasons. I wasn't like the past queens-young tall, dark and out of the fairy-princess fairy-princess mold." . The impossible dream all started about six vears ago when, after twp vears of Irving to cope as a single parent. Krestine met John and they married, creating a sort of ' Brady Bunch." , ... Krestine and her three children moved in with John and his three children. "It was a tremendously difficult situation at the beginning because John's kids weren't sure they wanted a new mother," Perkins explained ex-plained "I gained about 50 pounds trying to bring the two families together. But after we were all sealed seal-ed together in the (Mormon) temple, the tension eased." It was then time for Perkins, who at one time had owned a franchise for The Diet Center, to lose some weight. Regular exercise and a balanced diet helped her shed the ballast in about a year. "I had to lose the weight because I was setting a bad example for everybody I had helped when I was a diet counselor," she said. She has done so well in shedding her weight that in March, The Diet Center is going to use her in its national na-tional advertising campaign. "Before" and "after" photographs of Perkins will grace quite a few national na-tional magazines. So, how did a self-proclaimed backpacking girl' get interested in becoming Mrs. Utah? "I took my daughter, Jenny, to a modeling agency and they happened to say that they needed some mother models," Perkins said. "While I was there getting photographed, I met Ellen Scheiss, the assistant director of the Mrs. Utah pageant, and she asked me if I had ever thought about competing." The mission had begun. To prepare for the pageant, Perkins took lessons from Mrs. Utah 1985, Tricia Quai.
