Dr Sally A. Lloyd, assistant pro-lessor pro-lessor of family and consumer studies, and Dr. Rodney M. Gate, a colleague from Washington State University, studied 100 people who fell in love but broke up rather than get married. Results showed the ability to handle han-dle conflict was the key factor determining deter-mining relationship outcomes. "The trick is not to avoid conflict, hut to deal with it successfully." says Lloyd. "A well-handled conflict can actually improve the relationship relation-ship because partners end up understanding each other better after they've brought their feelings into the open and reached a mutual solution." Lloyd and Cate's objective was to enlarge on Cate's earlier study of 50 married couples. They wanted to find out how the dating experience for couples who broke up differed irom the experience of couples who married. The original study found that rela tionships that led to marriage started with low levels of conflct during the casual dating stage. As the relationships became more involved in-volved and exclusive, the amount of conflict increased significantly. The amount of conflict then leveled off through the stages of commitment and marriage. In their study of breakups. Lloyd and Cate found'that during the early-stages, early-stages, relationships that crashed looked just like relationships that led to marriage. That is. the amounts of conflict and love during casual and exclusive dating were similar. ' However, as the relationships that later broke up moved into the commitment com-mitment stage, conflict did not level off; rather, it increased sharply. And as these relationships began to deteriorate and head towards a breakup, the level of conflict jumped even higher. Llovd speculates that the "jumps" in conflict in the broken relationships relation-ships stemmed from an inability to successfully resolve disagreements. Virtually all romantic relation-ships relation-ships involve conflict con-flict misunderstandings are part of being in love and mutually depen- j ir .virtners try to ig- Uflll, MIC " f : . nore their differences, or it "ie don't reach compromises when arguments occur, the amount of conflict con-flict in the relationship may actually increase because misunderstandings misunderstan-dings have never been worked out. The same old problems keep coming com-ing up over and over again, she says. And eventually these problems erode the relationship. -One of the most interesting findings fin-dings was that as these relationships were developing, feelings of love and conflict coexisted-that is, the presence of disagreements, negative feelings or desires to change one s partner did not detract from the intensity in-tensity of love felt for the romantic partner." says Lloyd. "However, as the relationships began to break apart, as partners began to feel uncertain about the future of the romance, higher levels of conflict between the partners were coupled with lower levels of love." What can partners do to "improve" "im-prove" their fights? Lloyd offers a variety of suggestions. Try to stick to one issue at a time.
