Show Wednesday, March 14, 2001 The Park Record C-5 by Rick Brough RECORD GUEST WRITER Hollywood collides with small-town America in "State and Main," a sly comedy written and directed by David Mamet, which is the next presentation of the Park City Film Series, on March 16 and 17. The story deals with the travails tra-vails of a traveling movie company compa-ny filming a period piece called "The Old Mill." Having been kicked out of hisflrSt location in New Hampshire, director Walt Price (William H. Macy) hastily re-settles on Waterford, Vt. It's only after his company invades the town, commandeering the local hotel, that Walt finds out the historic mill advertised in the town's brochure burned down in 1960. Add to that: Walt has to sweet-talk the mayor (Charles Durning) and his pretentious wife (Patti Lupone) in order to get a Main Street filming permit; his female star (Sarah Jessica Parker) has suddenly decided she doesn't want to do an agreed-upon agreed-upon topless scene, at least not without another $800,000; the movie's leading man (Alec Baldwin) is falling back on his Looking forward to May Continued from C-1 hopes to take a climbing trip with her boyfriend. "I'd like to tour Red Rocks to Owens River Gorge outside Sierra, then go up to Smith Rock outside Bend and come down from there to City of Rocks in Idaho." said Creech, who will supplement her budget with home-cooked meals and camp or stay with friends along the way. "It's really hard to get away any other time of year," said Creech. "Christmas, Thanksgiving, President's Day, Fourth of July - they are all big no-no's." Fellow employee and bike-shop bike-shop specialist Rob Fowler, a pro downhill racer who hails from Rochester, New York works two full-time jobs in the winter so he can devote the majority of the summer to the national and regional mountain bike circuit. "I work all winter to not work all summer," said Fowler, who recently purchased a season pass to the Moab Skyway, a lift servicing servic-ing an upper region of the area's popular mountain biking terrain. Between stints of part-time work at White Pine's bike shop, Fowler will compete in races and frequent fre-quent Moab as often as every weekend. "I came out here because I was sick of having a real job. I have a lot of friends who have real jobs and are paying off $100,000 loans. They look at me like I'm crazy. But I will deliver pizza until I'm 70, if I have to, to keep racing and riding." habit of seducing teenage girls ("Everybody needs a hobby") and is this case is entangled with a young waitress (Julia Stiles) a liaison which in turn has incited incit-ed an opportunistic local politico (Clark Gregg). The film's producer pro-ducer (David Paymer) drops in, trying to get an Internet product placement inserted into his 19th-century 19th-century drama. Amid all this, the movie's idealistic ide-alistic writer (Phillip Seymour Hoffman) has fallen into a romance with the local bookstore owner (Rebecca Pidgeon, Mamet's wife) which may explain why you've never heard of her outside of Mamet's , movies.) The centerpiece of the film is Macy, who departs from his usual roles as a weak-willed duplicitous weasel to play a self-confident duplicitous weasel. Mamet gives m .ami him some choice bits of dialogue, among them: 'Who designed these costumes? It looks like Edith Head puked, and that puke designed these costumes." Owen Gleiberman of "Entertainment Weekly" noted" "The movie's a glorification of the art of lying, Hollywood-style. It celebrates a spirit of high-concept inauthenticity in which people peo-ple are never more honest than when they're twisting themselves in knots to be disingenuously 'sincere.'" "State and Main " plays on Friday, March 16, and Saturday, March 17,8 p.m., at the Jim Santy Auditorium. Rick Brough has been in the dark since 1980, writing film reviews for the Record and covering cover-ing the Sundance Film Festival . He can also be heard as a news correspondent for 91.9 KPCW.
