The rich silver mines of Park City provided that opportunity and the 21 -year-old young man went to work for the Silver King Coalition Mine Company. He saved his money and was soon able to rent the modest little building that once housed a shoe repair shop and later the Pezeley Market. Inexperienced and perhaps over-confident, McClean wasn't able to compete com-pete with the bigger stores and he was forced to close his business and return to the Silver King. In 1917, he married Gertrude Scanlon and they began what they believed would be a long life together. In 1919 the influenza epidemic was raging throughout the country and McClean became one of its victims. He died on April 12, 1919, at the age of 33. Not wanting the disease to spread, city officials prohibited funerals and other public events. Small services were held for McClean in the Richardson Funeral Home and at his grave in the City Cemetery. With his elderly mother and two sisters in Ireland, the only close relatives in attendance were his wife and his two brothers. His obituary in The Park Record expressed the feelings of Parkites who knew McClean... "A good man and a good citizen has gone to his reward." The Staff of the Park City Historical Society and Museum wishes everyone a Happy St. Patrick's Day.
