Temple Har Shalom receives Holocaust scroll by Nancy Tosti RECORD GUEST WRITER Perhaps more than other religious faiths, Judaism feels a 'special connection con-nection to tradition and the past For more than 4,000 yeae, the faith pf Abraham, Isaac and Jacob has been handed down from parents to their children, firM 6rallythen in written form. Central to ttfat written teaching teach-ing is the Torah, oFteaching, which is comprised of the five books of Moses. Jews are people of the book and the Torah 'u held in special esteem as a symbol of God's covenant with his chosen people. Temple Hfr, 'Shalom (THS) of Park City began with just four families fami-lies six years ago and has grown to over 160 families today. During that time there has been a very strong desire to re-ignite the spirit and beauty of Judaism and to keep alive their rich- history in the hearts and minds oj their children. Last week, THS became the new home for a 200-year-old Torah jcrolL This handwritten scroll is One of many that survived the Holocaust. "It's been , hurt, it's been injured, but we've recovered it. Sometimes we in life are hurt and are irijured but we can, recover." In tniS way, Rabbi Joseph Goldman describes the special spe-cial connection THS has with their newly acquired Torah. In 1963, with the cooperation of the Czech government, a London art collector arranged for the acquisition acqui-sition of 1,564 Torah scrolls that had been found in an abandoned synagogue syna-gogue in Prague. These priceless, hand-copied Hebrew Torahs were a part of a huge collection of Jewish items confiscated and desecrated by the Nazis during World War II. It is believed, that they intended to put the Torahs on display in a museum of "relics of an extinct Jewish race" which was planned following the victory vic-tory of the Thousand-Year Reich. Despite the terrible toll of the Holocaust, the Jewish people survived, sur-vived, as did the scrolls which had lain unused and unattended for more than 20 years. In 1964 the scrolls arrived in London to a temporary home in theWestminster Synagogue where the Czech Memorial Scrolls Trust was formed. The trust, a Jewish nonprofit non-profit organization, has repaired the scrolls and made an effort to educate people about them. The Torahs have been distributed, on permanent perma-nent loan, to synagogues and religious reli-gious institutions in Great Britain wn n The Grant Shoppe Linda Blonsley, J.D. 435.658.0506 wvw.grantshoppe.com THE GRANT SHOPPE CAN BE YOUR DEVELOPMENT DEPARTMENT Expert Grant Writing, Proposal Development Plan Implementation, Business Plan Creation Non-Profit Training & More STARK STEPHEN ZUSYRAflC RECORD Briefs The recently acquired Holocaust Torah scroll will be dedicated dedicat-ed at Temple Har Shalom's Shabbat services on April 20. and 20 other countries of the is a section from another Torah.
