After the formalities - speeches from Andrew Young, Deltas chair-man, chair-man, the Mayor of Atlanta et al -we boarded the South African Airways 747 for the very comfortable comfort-able non-stop IS hour flight to Johannesburg. Johannesburg itself has a reputation reputa-tion of being too dangerous to visit, but, like any city in the world, it has "no go" and excellent areas. The Sandton area is very smart, and has excellent hotels such as the Michelangelo Hotel, where I spent a very comfortable night, the Grace Hotel, or 10 Bompas for the smaller and more exclusive. 1 took a trip into Soweto to experience some of South Africa's changes first hand It is a very worthwhile experience -thought provoking, and not threatening threat-ening in any way. The following day, Jeremy Lock, my South African coordinator, drove me 2 hours north through interesting country to Welgevonden - a new 100,000 acre private game area. Here we arrived at Makweti, truly one of the country new and undiscovered gems. Alan and Dawn Kisner built it as their home, and added five outrageously comfortable comfort-able chalet suites to accommodate a maximum of 10 guests. Here, absolutely nothing has been forgotten forgot-ten in creature comforts and service from the lunch and dinner menus laid on your freshly made bed in the morning... to the personalized game walks with your ranger. The Big Five is there - but it is wild here, and takes some finding - which adds to the real African feeling. South Africa was suffering under its heaviest rains in 30 years so the roads had taken quite a beat- Guests enjoy a tub with a view ing; nevertheless, their comfortable Land Rover always got through. We also took the time to drive to Vaalwater to visit my dear friend Anna Merz - one of the world leading rhino experts, who moved south from Lewa Downs in Kenya several years ago. I found her in great form, continuing her work for rhinos worldwide from there. Back in Pretoria I visited Dlyria House - a superb showcase for Marieljie Van der Walt expansive antique collection. She has only six rooms, featuring superb colonial style comfort, and excellent cuisine. From here one can take several interesting tours of this famous Jacaranda capital city, and transfer easily to the Rovos Rail terminal. Owner Rohan Vos has bought and completely , I""" ! Sitting just in the lounge by the platform, sipping champagne, listening lis-tening to strings music while the steam engine maneuvers your train to the platform scarcely prepares one for the ultimate experience and luxury that one is about to enjoy. Rovos Rail trains operate routes to Namibia, Dar Es Salaam and Victoria Falls, but today I am embarking on a SO hour extravaganza extravagan-za to Cape Town. without doubt, this is the most luxurious train in the world, with impeccable personalized service giving you a unique African experience experi-ence from times gone by. The teak paneled Royal suite compartments feature king size beds, ensuite facilities facil-ities with a full bath, armchairs and a desk, with plenty of space to encourage you to spend time there. As the scenery unfolds into the famous Karoo desert, you witness and experience an Africa from long ago, whilst dressing for candlelight dinners and sumptuous food. Stops for trips into Kimberiy, its famous "Big Hole" diamond mine and the quaint 1900 spa town of Matjiesfontein preface the descent through the winelands towards Cape Town. I was very reluctant to say goodbye to my newfound 30 friends - but it was time to move on to the Cape Grace Hotel in the heart of the bustling waterfront, overlooked by the 3,000-foot Table Mountain, which is certainly extremely comfortable, and perfectly perfect-ly located. Cape Town is said to be the most A O XU: ix?' x , rA,. . - ft ' beautiful city in the world -1 have to agree, and I went on the prescribed pre-scribed tours to Cape Point and Table Mountain for the first time in many years. Table Mountain has a new 50 person cable car with a rotating floor. For hikers, the summit sum-mit is attainable in about 112 hours -1 tried, but in attempting a different differ-ent route, ended up doing a bit of rock scrambling! I collected my Avis car and drove an hour North to Stellenbosch and the winelands. I revisited the superb Lanzerac Manor, whose buildings were begun in, 1690, and drove on to L'Avenir winery. Marc Wiehe, a Mauritian by birth, can sleep up to 10 guests in cozy surroundings while proudly sharing with you his pride and joy - a vineyard which has recently come to the forefront of South Africa excellent wine industry. indus-try. . Driving on through the spectacular spectacu-lar and scenic Franschoek pass, I reached Hermanus along the remote Southern coast The refurbished refur-bished Marine Hotel in this little town famous for its whale watching is definitely worth staying at In addition to its Chateau and Kelais restaurant, the town hosts many excellent restaurants, as well restaurants, as well as B&B. I have always dreamed of doing a cage dive with the Great White sharks, so I drove on to Gansbaai from whence we took our boat out to the kelp fields off shore. Grant runs a serious and efficient study operation - but it was not to be. After slopping foul smelling chum and blood over the side for 7 hours in less than perfect calm seas we retreated to the harbor with only seals and gulls on our checklist check-list (Check out April National Geographic for what I should have seen.) The coast road back to Cape Town will take about two hours and provides spectacular views. A night at the "Nellie"- the Mount Nelson Hotel Africa most famous old colonial hotel with its spectacular backdrop of Table Mountain, should not be missed when in Cape Town. My two-hour flight to Durban the next day brought me to humid conditions with temperatures in the low 80, and driving north along the excellent coast toll road took me through vast sugar plantations before reaching Dukudweni and turning inland. I arrived at Shakaland, a 49 room Zulu cultural experience. Here is a rare chance to witness first-hand a "living" village adjacent to the hotel whose rooms are built in traditional style. For a more personalized and, I felt, unique experience, I visited their remote satellite village - IB FASSC CITY RETAIL SPACE LOCATED AT TIE TOVN LIFT FLAZA AT 025 MAIN STQECT , x " . v . - PHOTO COURTESY OF TIM LAPME Simunve. I On the drive back from Poind! I visited the superb Zimbali resort, which is just 45 minutes North of Durban, and enjoyed a fine lunch and a superb game of golf on their uniquely African links cpurse, , t"tl The long flight home, , sittiig alongside Jesse Jackson, gave ne time to reflect that South Africa is indeed a fantastic destination with such contrast as it moves into its new dawn. , I realize that in this update I have not even touched on Africa -the fabulous and varied wildlife, the warm and friendly people, the vast horizons, unforgettable sunrises and sunsets and the vivid clear starry star-ry nights. This was my second recent trip to South Africa. It is a completely different African experience from that to be had in East Africa - and can easily be combined with the wonders of Botswana, Namibia and Zimbabwe. My special thanks go to Jeremy Lock, Samantha Ford of Hotelogue, Rohan Vos, Makweti, Kingsley Holgate and Delta Airlines. . .... .... . Tim Lapage is a Kenyan African consultant based in Park City.
