OHw pre 0531 DO High school softbal! players showing improvement JV scores nine, varsity shut-out by Deralk Jensen OF THE RECORD STAFF In their continuing effort to build interest in girls softball. the coaches at Park City High may finally be seeing some results. Against Union this week, the JV squad, which plays in a format where the team with the most runs after no hour-and-a-half wins, nearly did. The Lady Miners turned in an explosive offensive performance before succumbing 10-9. "The JV did awesome," said coach Laurie Alexander. "It was a very-good boost for them." Brittany Berry pitched for the Park City JV, striking out seven batters and going the distance. With the lumber, several players were effective, led by Lacey Arnold, who hit a bases-loaded double and garnered three RBI's. Kristin Everson started off the hitting for the team. She eventu-allv eventu-allv scored twice and recorded an RBI. Whitnc) Williams added a hit and Alissa Smitn and Molly Miller both scored twice on the afternoon. "They just did some positive things," added Alexander, "and the best thing about it is it showed them they could do them." With only three seniors in the program, the teams have not had a wealt h of confidence so far this season. Besides those players and a single junior. Park City must field two teams with primarily ninth and tenth graders. "There's lots of pressure on them to compete with their peers," said Alexander, who feels like all the games the teams have played have been winnable despite the age discrepancy. "Mentally they re not all quite there, but phvsically they can compete with anybody." The nemesis for both squads thus far has been passed balls. Since neither the varsity nor the JV have a natural catcher, they've been forced to juggle different dif-ferent players into the position. For the vanity, Dana Peay. one of the club's best athletes with a strong arm, will take a crack at catcher beginning Friday when they play Wasatch. "We're kind of in transition right now. We need to find a full-time full-time catcher that can cut down on all the passed balls," Alexander said. Against Union, thf; varsity were never in the game, getting blanked 12-0. The only offense came from Lauren Coon, who hit a double off the wall to go along with a single. But shoddy hitting by the rest of the team, and passed balls on defense, was too much to overcome. "We just couldn't score anybody." any-body." lamented Alexander. The frusiration was echoed by head coach Jessie Coon, who wants to see the girl's bats wake up. "Hopefully it will be more fun next time," he said. The team, currently sitting at 5-6 in the standings, can get to .500 with a w in Friday.
