Show Saturday, April 15, 2000 Th9 Park Record A-11 Fresh Prints Contributions from Park City kids The following letters to the editor were written by Ms. Juskaitis' 9th-grade 9th-grade students at Park City High School THEATER OVERKILL Editor: I heard on KPCW that the city is planning to build a five-scene cinema to replace of the Holiday Village cinemas. I donl think this would be a very good idea because of the 12-screen cinema that they are planning to build in Kimball Junction. I have seen for myself what a big. new cinema can do to a smaller cinema. In my old town in Washington there was a theater about 10 minutes min-utes away. It was a five-screen cinema cin-ema also. The next nearest theater was about 33 minutes away, so this five-screen theater brought in a lot of business. Then my town built a 14-screen cinema that took away all the business from the five-scree ii cinema. The five-screen five-screen had to basically shut down and become a dollar theater. I would advise not building both theaters in Park City because of the business one may take away from the other. Anyway, 20 minutes min-utes down the canyon is a dollar theater. We donl need one in Park City, too. Sincerely. Grace Crudall TEEN ACTIVITIES Editor. In Park City there is nothing to do for teens. For the most part, if you want something to do, you must be into school activities, skiing, ski-ing, snowboarding or being prepared pre-pared to drive to Salt Lake. When the snow melts. Park City runs dry of fun things to do for those under 16. What could be done is have a dance club, bowling aiiey. or a place were teens can go to have fun. It is sad that in Park City there is not one arcade. The closest dance place is 30 minutes away. If you donl have a car, how do you get there? What this city needs are athletic or entertainment areas close to teens in Park City. Many of these teens are skater and they have their skateboard fiark, but there are other sports, n Kimball Junction there are no athletic facilities like the Racquet Club where people in the county can go to play sports. . This would be a better area for teens to go hang out and have fun. If there were more teen facilities in Park City there would be mure y,. . things for teens to do whea there is no snow left on the mountains. Sincerely. Aim WUhelnu TRANSPORTATION WOES Editor. I am a 14 year-old student at PCHS and I 'live in Prospector Square. I have numerous friends that live outside of the city limits. They often have nowhere to go unless they have a ride into town. I am also unable to visit them as the city buses do not go out beyond'the city limits. If it is possible, please converse with the city transit department and find out if it is possible to make transportation routes, maybe once or twice per hour, out to Jeremy Ranch, Pinebrook, Summit Park. Silver Creek, Silver Springs and Silver Summit. If these routes are possible, then I think the tax in the county should be raised to support the new city transit. Sincerely. Joa Hartley HARASSMENT Editor The cops always seem to want to bust our parties totally harmless parties. They obviously have nothing better to do than to bust innocent parties where we. as local students, spend our Saturday nights. Especially as a freshman student, 1 donl have any real means of transportation, so we go somewhere and stay there. Honestly, what are we supposed to do on our weekend? Sit at home? I donl think so. At a recent party I was at, on a Saturday night, there were at least four cop cars that pulled up to the house to bust a party, and more came. They had no reason to bust it. There was no loud musk, no cars on the street and nothing for the neighbors to complain about. It was merely a freshman get-together get-together where we could be at someone's home, safe, and not bothering the public. There is nothing wrong with that. Would you rather have students stu-dents loitering at Albert sons or on Main Street? 1 donl think that it is right tot six or more cop cars pull up to a party and bust ail of the kids, just for trying to have a good, fun weekend. Sincerelv. AfieMcPfcee ii ii ii u,, i) u n!k INDOOR SKATING Editor, I am very pleased by bow the city has finally built the skate park- Wouldnl it be better if it was indoor? Then kids who donl want to ski all weekend can go skate. Whoever is making the ramps should go down to Real Ride Skate park in SLC and check their ramps for some ideas. Or call VPI, a ramp-building company that built most of Real Ride Is ramps. Cement parks wouldnl please everybody and wouldnl be that fun after a few times skating on it. They could use masonite if it was indoors. Mtsonite is a lot faster on wheels and your body slides across it when you fall, unlike cement that rips your skin. It wouldn't even maiter if you had to pay to get into an indoor skate park because everybody would be willing to pay the price to skate. I think that an indoor skate park is the way to please the locals and skaters from all around. Sincerely. Matt Thompson DRIVER PRACTICE Editor I am 15-years old, living in Park City. I am a person who believes in the philosophy of "Practice makes Perfect." This November. I will turn 16 and. hopefully, receive my driver's license. At this time in my life, driving is becoming a big deal, and 1 am starting io doubt how well I will be able to drive as a 16-year old. It is only six months before I turn 16 and I havenl even been behind the wheel once. As a requirement for receiving a license, you must take Drivers Education. Park City High School has you take it the quarter you turn 16. meaning when I take it, the session will finish a week before I go to Heber in hopes of coming back with a license. How am i supposed to be trusted trust-ed as a food driver and not injure myself and others with only a couple cou-ple weeks of practice? I feel that Utah should follow the example of other states. I know for a fact that in Indiana, the minute you turn 15 you take Driver's Ed and are given a permit to drive with only your parents. That is almost a whole year more than Utah driven. driv-en. How can we' be expected to compete with that? Then to top it off, the local news channels broadcast that Utah has the highest death rate among young drivers. Welt that Hvv,(i iiniiw iilln- ii!i..iiinKil .ii II nH " m strange, we have no time to practice, prac-tice, and then we are put on the read to die. The people doing the study donl say it is caused by lack of training, but instead the influence influ-ence of driving with other teenagers. They think that when we are with friends, all we want to do is showboat, but really we just want to be able to go find something some-thing fun to do. I. myself, am in favor of letting us be the best we can. Sincerelv. Sua White SKATING SURFACE Editor I am PCHS student, and I support sup-port the fact that you are building e new skate park on Park Avenue. I think that this will be beneficial to the community because it will keep teenagers that are up to no good off the streets. Rumor has it that this will be a cement skate park This would be a very big mistake. mis-take. One, because if I were to fall on a cement surface I would be injured more than if I were on Masonite. Another reason that Masonite is beiter is because in a rainstorm Masonite would hold up better. One of the last reasons is that Masonite has a smoother surface ihan cement and it is easier easi-er to control yourself. I like what you guys did with the park that we had before at the resort which, may I remind you, had Masonite. I also think that you would lose a lot of regular park users because of the fact that it is cement. Sincerely. Nik Kohler HOCKEY FAN Editor, I am a 14-vear-old freshman at Park City High School. I think that it's a great idea to build an indoor ice rink at Trailside Park If an ke rink is built, then I think a lot more people will skate or play hockey. It is a real pain to go all the way down to Salt Lake every time you want to practice hockey. The high school hockey team would be a lot better if they could practice more often. The ke rink at the ski report is not big enough to play hockey. 1 am very glad that they are building build-ing the rink, and would find myself using it as well as many of my friends. " Sincerelv. .
