AirlfnS lUff! Marianne Cone artistically brings the past to the present by Edd Kincaid RECORD GUEST WRITER Marianne Cone is not what one might call a shy, retiring individual. individ-ual. She is a cheerleader and a coach, as well as quarterback with issues that capture her attention. She speaks out when she feels the need to protect what is important to her and at the top of that list are the special environment of Park City as well as the larger view of our Western heritage. The Park City Museum would not be the fascinating place it is if it had not been for her ability, as director, to work with others to create displays that tell a story through artifacts, photographs and construction. The Park City Mine owes its outstanding exhibit to her creative and artistic ability to bring the past to the present. Says Cone: "I am a Westerner. I grew up appreciating the expanse, beauty and freedom of this land- ' scape. I will choose an empty desert over a crowded room. My love of wildness and peoples' bond to their land is reflected within my work. The human figure is a natural natur-al part of the landscape, not a dominating force. "Perhaps it is the nostalgia of my middle age that attracts me to scenes which are disappearing from the Western landscape. A time when useful buildings were designed and built by the user, not a corporate architect. When whimsy whim-sy was allowable and materials were close at hand. Will new barns always be windowless, metal boxes? Will the corner gas station be replaced by futuristic cubicle-encased cubicle-encased cashiers, or plastic-clad one-stop travel centers? Will chickens ever be raised again in modest-size homemade coops, reflecting the character of their builders?" A native of Park City, Cone acquired a bachelor of fine arts (cum laude) from the University of Utah. In 1973, she made a commitment com-mitment to paint more and to work only in art-related fields. She - S Fo r t h wee ARIES (March 20 - April 19) Aren't you just the sweetest little lamb? Accommodating Venus has somehow convinced con-vinced your ruler, Bossy Mars, to lighten up & be amicable for the entire week. It's not completely smooth sailing, however. The Moon in the annoyingly picky sign of Virgo starts to get to you by the wee hours of Monday morning ("They call it Stormy Monday") & you're not exactly gentle anymore. any-more. Tuesday & Wednesday brings your lunar low. Take some time to recharge & let someone else be the leader for a change. TAURUS (April 20 - May 19) As the Demanding Sun moves into your opposite sign, you must move into review mode. What challenges did you set out for yourself on your last birthday? Have you even started working on your objectives or have you been procrastinating? (If you're currently scrambling to find your written & forgotten list of goals amidst last year's birthday birth-day cards, you're in trouble.) Here's a little hint on which sectors of your chart could use some attention: Professional, Spiritual, & Sexual. (Please note that I did not mention chocolate, chips & salsa, or ice cream. That sector of your chart doesn't need any more attention than you're already giving it.) GEMINI (May 20 -June 20) Yes, it's that time of the year again. The emphasis shifts from playful entertainment to youi daily duties like work, household organization, & exercise. (I can just see all of you making a mad dash to find a different astrologer who'll give you a different outlook.. out-look.. But, unless that other astrologer is reprinting a column from June, the forecast remains the same.) Just give in. Take care of the tedious job projects from summer that have been hidden under your desk blotter. At home dust the cobwebs & straighten your hanging pictures. And then, go pay your late dues at the health club. Who knows? Maybe they haven't already given your locker away. CANCER (June 21 -July 21) Things are beginning to get interest- ing this week. Romance, amusement, amuse-ment, sports, & gambling take on a significant role in your life. (This won't be cheap, so don't start get ting cautious with your cash.) Meantime, on the job, there may be a thrill-a-minute thanks to Fun-loving Venus & Action-oriented Mars in your work house. Problems do pop up on Monday when the Sexy Scorpio Sun in your romance house loses the battle with Cool & Aloof Uranus. (Don't expect any hugs & kisses from sweetie.) sweet-ie.) Although Monday's battle is lost, your sensitive lunar ruler wins the war on Tuesday & Wednesday. Pucker up for your victory kisses. IEO (July 22 -August 22) You're definitely being pulled in two very different directions this week. The Sun, your regal ruler, is dealing with the intense & emotional energies of Scorpio in your house of past attachments & old habit patterns. t Card design by Marianne Cone. This and other Park City historical his-torical commemorative merchandise can be found at Art at the Top. 255 Main Street, in the Treasure Mountain Inn. became a graphic designer, newspaper news-paper layout artist, art director and an art instructor. In 1975, through a grant from the National Endowment for the Arts, she was named Artist-in-the-School in Logan and the Springville Art Museum. "Exploring the unknown is an important part of my art," states Cone. "Time passes too quickly to cover the same ground, repeat the same image. I paint for my own pleasure. I seek to improve my technique, explore different media, and express my ever-changing view of the world. Painting is the only endeavor which uses my entire experience and total concentration. con-centration. There are no predetermined pre-determined solutions or correct answers. "My painting style has evolved from watercolor, woodcut, and drawing to pastel and acrylic. The recent multi-level constructions on canvas, wood and hardboard have non-rectilinear borders. They incorporate painting, collage, woodcarving, found objects and sculpture." Today, at her studiogallery, Art at the Top, located in the Treasure Mountain Inn on Main Street, one can see and admire her latest multi-level constructions, prints and painting. She shares the studiogallery stu-diogallery with friend and fellow Park City artist, Jossy Lownes. , RSTREAM lc of October (Clue: If a visit from Mom makes you whine & complain, you're psychically psychi-cally stuck in your early teen years.) However, Venus & Mars (the Ginger Rogers & Fred Astaire of the zodiac) are dancing around in your house of love & laughter. Stick with them & you'll have more fun. And, your Mom won't have to relive your adolescent years. VIRGO (August 23 - September 21) Now that the majority of the planets are moving forward again, you can start to get some things done. (The one exception: Karmic Saturn in your house of taxes. If you missed the final October 1 5th extension, call a tax attorney or enter the witness protection program for a new identity.) The weekend finds you motivated & committed to keeping in touch with any distant friends or family. Switch long distance companies long enough to get a $100 credit & go wild. Wednesday is good for intimate moments at home. Don't even THINK about making an appointment with your IRS auditor unless you find this particular auditor attractive. LIBRA (September 22 - October 22) You're a bit neurotic about money right now & rfs interfering with your ability to have a good time. Your honey is capable of bailing you out, but not without a lecture about fiscal fis-cal responsibility & who needs that? Your luck kicks in on Tuesday & Wednesday when the Moon in your charming sign stimulates stim-ulates Fortunate Jupiter & Spontaneous Uranus in your house of speculation. Get out the stock market pages & pick out a winner. Then, when your honey starts lecturing, show off your inflating portfolio. SCORPIO (October 23 - November 21) Even you secretive types must come out of the shadows during your zodiac Sun cycle so, you may as well enjoy the attention. Your birthday falls on Thursday or Friday? You crave glamour & status for the coming year. Saturday thru Monday celebrators decide to go healthy & change your diet & exercise regime. If you were born on Tuesday or Wednesday, you'll be less extreme & better at compromise. All of you are spending money as fast as you make it this week. Return your birthday presents for cash refunds whenever possible. SAGITTARIUS (Nov. 22 - Dec 20) Making BIG plans & setting long-range goals is in the picture this week, but don't assume everything will go smoothly. You may screw ! 'fll- . . Together they make a scene worth visiting. Cone's constructions are fun, clever, colorful and, yes, they are ART. The imagination, creative thinking and understanding of art principles that go into them is a true challenge and it pays off. "Arches Tour No. 1 " is an acrylicmixed media with a rectangular-shaped middlepiece, a curve (a road) starting below the rectangle, rectan-gle, and above it all the famous Arches cut to shape. Traveling along the road, going up the hill is a vehicle with a typical bicycle attached to the rear. Along the side of the rectangular space (if one looks carefully), there is the word "ARCHES" spelled out in hide-and-seek letters. Living in Old Town with her husband, fellow artist David Chaplin, Cone has not given up on portraying Park City. A recent creation is a set of four scenes of Old Town. Each is a small card of delightful color and design that one seldom sees on a print so small. How fortunate we are that Cone made the decision to return to the town of her birth. Through her verbalization and art pieces she has helped to explain Park City's past and is continually working to make its future a better bet-ter place to live and to enjoy the arts. 22-25, 997 VVriViUV on the details, over-estimate your abilities, & alienate those people you accuse of being too small-minded to understand your sweeping vision for the future. Meantime, you've still got Captivating Venus & Sexy Mars in your personality house. If I were you, I'd take advantage of present popularity & a. ?. v www mm a A let tomorrow take care of itself. CAPRICORN (December 21 - January 19) Just when your money flow was moving in the right direction, it hits a snag. It is temporary, tempo-rary, but you may need to quit gripping your wallet so tightly in order to get it moving again. As the planets occupy your house of humanitarianism & self-sacrifice, the emphasis empha-sis is on volunteer work & charity contributions. contribu-tions. So, I suggest that you find a little time & money for those who are less fortunate then, Generous Jupiter will start filling up your wallet again. Okay, it's a selfish reason to be unselfish, but you'll still chalk up some good karma points. AQUARIUS (January 20 - February 17) As the Dramatic Sun moves into a position of challenge to your ruler, Unpredictable Uranus, celestial sparks do fly. Although the exact date of conflict is Monday, your weekend week-end will likely lead up to it with unexpected incidences & possible accidents. Avoid anything any-thing mechanical, home repairs requiring a ladder or tools, & using electricity as a power source. That does limit your options, doesn't it? Well. How about searching for a close-by cave you can relax in until this is over? PISCES (February 18 -March 19) No, it's not your imagination. Things really are a bit unsettling for you Sensitive Neptunians. Perhaps the launch of the rocket rock-et to Saturn, with the intended "fly-bye" in 1999, has set off your fears about the millennium. millen-nium. Perhaps all the El Nino predictions are making nervous. Or, maybe your honey has wiped out the bank account to buy a kit to assemble a homemade ark with room for a zoo. Oh, that was YOU that ordered the ark kit? Well, whatever you do, don't ask an Aquarian to help you assemble it. By Lynda Ray' POOR |
