Transportation Dept. continues to work on paid-parking plan More details will be ironed out on Oct. 30 by Jay Hamburger OF THE RECORD STAFF As Park City nears the day that new parking meters will be placed throughout its downtown core, including such popular areas as Main Street and Swede Alley, the city's Transportation Department is busy working on a final plan for operating the meters. Just last week the Park City Council listened as Transportation Director Hope Bleeker presented several options for the meters. The Council, though, seeing very few members of the public at the meeting, decided to delay its discussion dis-cussion about the various paid-parking paid-parking plans. "(The meters) are the first step in addressing (the city's) parking deficit," Bleeker says about the meters. "Our predic tion is that (the meters) will free up spaces." Even so, Bleeker is adamant about the fact that some people in Park City are under the impression that the meters will decrease the amount of traffic in the downtown core of the city. The meters will merely reduce the amount of drivers who park in the downtown area for long periods of the day, in some cases, all day. "It is our thought that it is cutting cut-ting into the retail market," Bleeker said about drivers who take up a parking space for extended amounts of time. "My guess is that there will be more cars in the core." Although there are many questions remaining about the soon-to-be-installed meters, Bleeker is already planning for the future, including the possibility possibil-ity of moving the meters to other locations in the city and, at some point, removing the meters entirely. "They can be moved around and concentrated in other parts of the city," Bleeker said. As for removing the meters on Main Street, Bleeker said such a step would only happen, at the earliest, after three or four years of operation. ' Bleeker said the placing of parking meters is only one step in an overall transportation plan for the Park City area, which is one of the fastest-growing areas in the United States. A key element of an overall plan, Bleeker said, is an increase in bus service in the city. Bleeker said the city will be purchasing new buses that are more fuel efficient effi-cient than those currently operated operat-ed by the city. An increase in the amount of bus routes, such as those that serve the City Park area and Royal Street, will probably prob-ably be implemented, Bleeker said. Bus service to The Canyons could be a possibility in the future, but, because of state reg- Please see Bus service A-6 Advertise in the official program for the Chevy Truck America's Opening Cafe de Columbia Ski World Cup at the Park City Mountain Resort Total distribution, 18,000 Advertising deadline, Wednesday, October 29.
