From the Firehouse "Change your clock, change your battery" it it Submitted by Park City Fire Service District As the fall time change approaches, the Park City Fire Service District wants to remind residents to make another change that could save their lives changing chang-ing the batteries in their smoke alarms. The most commonly cited cause of non-working smoke alarms: worn or missing batteries. Home fire deaths began to rise in 1995, and non-working smoke detectors were a contributing factor. In 1995, there were 3,640 civilian fire deaths in homes, an increase of 6.2 percent from 1994. Civilian injuries in homes totaled 19,125. Changing smoke alarm batteries once a year is one of the simplest, most effective ways to reduce these tragic deaths and injuries. In fact, a working smoke, alarm nearly cuts in half the risk of dying in a home fire. To save lives and prevent needless need-less injuries in Summit County, the Park City Fire District has joined forces with the International Association of Fire Chiefs and Energizer Brand batteries for the 10th anniversary of the "Change Your Clock, Change Your Battery" campaign. The program urges all Americans to adopt a simple, life-saving life-saving habit: changing smoke alarm batteries when changing clocks back to standard time each fall. Miii p; r" , i"A working smoke alarm pro- ; vides an early warning and critical extra seconds to escape," said Kelly Gee, Park City Fire Chief. "This is particularly important for those most at risk of dying in a home fire, such as children and seniors." Tragically, fire can kill selectively. Those most at risk include: Children: an average of three children die each day in home fires. Fire is the second leading cause of accidental deaths among children under age five, placing them at twice the risk of dying in a home fire. Ninety percent of fire deaths involving children occur in homes without working smoke alarms. Seniors: adults over age 75 are three to four times more likely to die in home fires than the rest of the population. Many seniors are unable to escape quickly. Low income households: many low income families are unable to afford batteries for their smoke alarms. These same households house-holds often rely on poorly installed, maintained or misused portable or area heating equipment equip-ment a main cause of fatal home fires. Additionally, Gee recommends residents use the "extra" hour they save from the time change this weekend to test the smoke alarm by pushing the test button, planning plan-ning "two ways out," and practicing practic-ing those escape routes with the entire family. Families should also prepare a fire safety kit that includes working work-ing flashlights and fresh batteries. A great new way to ensure that 'batteries are fresh is the" Energizer iOn-baftelyr tester1. This device allows the 'batteries to be tested on the spot anytime, anywhere just by pressing two green dots on the cell itself.
