Show .1 i Wednesday. October oo 1QQ7 The Park Record B-5 ' for Under-14 Attention Comeback time O Park City girls beat Gators 3-2 but lose to always-tough Tsunami Submitted by Jim Beck The Park City Under-14 girls soccer team beat the Gators of Sandy last Wednesday by a score of three to two. Park City has faced the Gators two previous times and come up one goal short each time. Wednesday's win was particularly rewarding as the Gators jumped on top 2-0 within the first 15 minutes. The defense picked up the intensity and started winning the loose balls and feeding the forwards. Late in the first half Taylor Smith finished off a corner kick to put Park City within one at the half. Park City continued to control the midfield in the second half as Kristin Silvestri did an excellent job winning the ball and feeding the forwards. Erin Morrison scored from the right wing followed by Smith from the middle. The Gators created some opportunities in the closing minutes but were turned back by some good saves by Megan Carlin in the goal. The game was the strongest played this year and credit goes to the entire team for coming back to win. Saturday Park City played Tsunami at the North 40 field. The game looked like a carbon copy of the last meeting as Tsunami went up by two, the second being a free kick awarded from the 18-yard line which went in high in the far side of the goal. Park City again stiffened on defense and started coming back as Erin Morrison scored on a break away. Park City continued to create opportunities; however, they ended up with the goal keeper instead of the net. The game kept the sidelines in suspense but Park City ran out of time with the score 2-1 in favor of Tsunami. The Americans medaled in every World Cup last year and plan on more of the same in the six World Cup events leading up to Nagano. A U.S. sled captured a bronze medal in last year's World Championship in Nagano. Americans, including Minton and Jones, fell short in the last Winter Olympics in Lillehammer. Jones and his partner finished 13th in the two-man and Minton finished just behind Jones. The U.S. bobsled contingent acquired new Jeff Bodine sleds just before the 1994 Games, part of the reason for the poor results, according to" Jones and Minton. But after using the sleds for several sever-al years now, they are confident medals will come. On the top of Minton and Jones' list of teams to knock off in Nagano is the popular Jamaican Bobsled Team. "Especially that sorry Jamaican team, we're going to beat them by 20 positions," Minton said. "It's a shame they're more popular than we are." U.S. and international sliders will be in Park City through Oct. 31 when they depart for the Calgary World Cup. And if Jones and Minton are any indicator, Utah is a nice place to spend two weeks.
