Show 14 SPRINGVILLE HERALD Thursday, February 8, 2007 Sixth Gear: 2007 Subaru Outback 2.5 IT Limited Daniel Souza STAFF WRITER You have seen them before. be-fore. And just like kangaroos kanga-roos in the Aussie world, the Subaru Outback is not new to Utah terrain. The World's First Sport Utility Wagon introduced for the 1995 model year, the Outback Out-back melds passenger car with SUV attributes. Since then the Japanese wagon became basic equipment for a generation of outdoors enthusiasts who needed all-road all-road capability and SUV-like SUV-like versatility, thanks to its synonym of an all-wheel drive system Like all Subaru models, the Outback is equipped as standard with Symmetrical Symmetri-cal All-Wheel Drive, which powers all four wheels all the time and automatically transfers more power to the wheels with the best tractioa Also contributing to its all-road, all weather capability is the generous 8.4 inches of ground clearance. clear-ance. What really caught my attention as I strode around town with this wagon was a small dial on its center console. The bigger-than-ra-dio center knob commands the SI drive option equipped on my test drive. The new Si-Drive system allows the driver to maximize engine en-gine performance, control and efficiency by choosing from among three select-' select-' able modes - "Intelligent," "Sport" and "Sport Sharp" - all using the rotary dial on the center console. The SI-DRIVE system enables en-ables three different modes of vehicle performance characteristics by regulating regulat-ing the engine control unit (as well as the transmission control unit in automatic transmission models), and by fine-tuning the electronically electroni-cally controlled throttle. With Intelligent mode selectedthe se-lectedthe tamest of all of the three options the system sys-tem reduces engine torque and maximum power and switches to a more relaxed throttle response curve. Intelligent In-telligent mode is an ideal for regular everyday driving. In "Sport" mode, performance perfor-mance is similar to the 2006 model, with quick throttle responses and powerful, linear lin-ear acceleration. In "Sport Sharp" mode my favorite favor-ite option (forget good gas mileage on this one), Si-Drive Si-Drive modifies the engine's electronic throttle mapping to deliver lightning-quick throttle response and more power sooner. The 2.5L Outback has the engineering to back up the different driving modes. It sports a 2.5-liter intercooled turbo Boxer engine that produces 243 horsepower 6,000 rpm and 241 Ib.-ft. of peak torque 3,600 rpm. Subaru Active Valve Control Con-trol System (AVCS) variable vari-able valve timing optimizes power at all engine speeds. A functional hood scoop supplies air to the engine-mounted engine-mounted intercooler. But engine and performance perfor-mance alone is not all. All Outback models feature a standard trip computer. On the 2.5 XT Limited, it is in-. in-. tegrated with the SI-DRIVE display in the instrument cluster. The trip computer is part of the navigation system sys-tem on models so equipped. On-all other models, it is combined with a digital clock display located in the center of the dashboard. Some of its functions and displays include outside air temperature, fuel consumption, con-sumption, driving range and estimated driving time. The Outback 2.5 XT Lim ited exclusively features an electroluminescent LED (light-emitting diode) gauge display. Subaru offers three different differ-ent versions of Symmetrical All-Wheel Drive in the 2007 Outback line, each tailored to the model and transmission. transmis-sion. My test drive, the Outback Out-back 2.5 XT Limited came equipped with the 5-speed automatic transmission - which uses a version of the system called Variable Torque Distribution (VTD). A planetary gear center differential works with an electronically controlled continuously variable hydraulic hy-draulic transfer clutch to manage power distribution. VTD normally sends more power to the rear wheels (45:55) to enhance handling agility, but the system continuously con-tinuously adjusts power distribution in response to driving conditions. . Gas mileage should hover hov-er around 19 mpg for city and 26 mpg on 1-15 and its equivalents.
