Guest Writer This is the last part of a three part history prepared by Myke Hall recounts Dillman 's life after settling Vernal. The Britt boys remain in Ashley but their story is less well documented. Pete Dillman and John Stein-aker Stein-aker followed the road made by the early settlers up onto Taylor Mountain. They built a cabin and cut poles for Pard Dodds to build fences and corrals. This area is still known as Dodd's Hollow. Pete went to work at the Whiterocks Indian Agency. Agent Chritchlow sent Pete and Clint McLane to Colorado to rescue the white women captured by the Utes after Meeker Massacre. When they got there the women had already been rescued. In 1 880, the winter was so bad that Pete carried the mail from Ashley to Brown's Park and back on snowshoes. In 1882, Pete married Julia Davis, the daughter of Nathan Davis. Pete had been working for Nathan. Pete and his bride moved onto Ashley Center, later called Vernal. He did some teaching at the Center. Pete opened a drug store in Ashley Center and brought the first doctor, Dr. Gardiner, to the valley. Pete worked as sheriff, worked as a forest ranger and later became the area's first game warden. He was part of the posse that captured Dave Lant and Harry Tracy in Brown's Park. (Tracy was as dangerous a criminal and an escapee from Salt Lake City's jail. Hiding from the law in Brown's Park, he and Lant were involved with another outlaw by the name of Patrick Johnson who killed Willie Strang. Dillman was part of posse that entered the Park after the criminals in the fall of 1898.) Pete's son Ray Dillman became be-came a well known lawyer in Roosevelt. Ray's wife Mildred was instrumental in publishing the History of Duchesne County. Pete Dillman, Finley and Wilbur Britt, three friends who came to Ashley Valley as some of the earliest settlers, made their mark in out local history. fllussa Kahn Waey llaugh Friday, April 18, 2008 A v avis vwapiii Hie Country Bear ' 6S E. Dawn is an LPN, and has been employed at Ashley Regional Re-gional Medical Center since 2003. She is currently pursuing her RN degree. Dawn has a gift for connecting with the elderly patients she cares for. Recently, Dawn was instrumental in caring car-ing for Rosita feamora, a patient at Ashley Regional. Without Dawn's diligent efforts, Rosita could not have progressed and healed to the point she has. As Rosita's physician put it, "The underrated qualities of nursing care such as genuine love, compassion and infinite patience, combined with superior supe-rior nursing skills have made a tremendous difference in the remarkable recovery of this difficult dif-ficult patient, and are perfectly exemplified in Dawn. In this case, Dawn's love and beautiful humanity have kept this patient buoyed up, healed her mind and body and given her a reason and prospect for a new life." "Ashley Regional Medical Center is committed to improving improv-ing health by delivering quality patient care. We are extremely proud to recognize Dawn Merrick Mer-rick for her efforts on behalf of our patients," said Si Hutt, CEO at Ashley Regional. "Her exemplary work in improving health and her compassion for our patients set a high standard for healthcare professionals. We are proud to have her as part of our healthcare team; it is the individual dedication of people like Dawn that make Ashley Regional a great hospital. Many patients have benefited from her kindness, commitment to caring, and nursing skill." r for your community and your family. Steve McPherson tripped and fell down a staircase at his brother's home. He knew he had broken his arm, but didn't realize he had a much more serious neck injury. Steve was driven to the Emergency Room at Ashley Regional Medical Center for treatment. The ER staff came to the car and instantly realized he was at risk for a spinal cord injury. With no motion allowed in his neck, they swiftly applied a cervical collar, removed him from the car, placed him on a gumey and brought him inside. Dr. Bruce Daniel, ER Physician, immediately ordered a CT scan. Dr. David Perry, Radiologist, diagnosed within seconds of the CT scan an unstable fracture in the neck. Under Dr. Daniel's care, Steve was then immobilized and prepared for air transportation to Grand Junction, Colorado, for surgery and further treatment. "I am so grateful to the ER staff and their quick thinking," said Steve. "The neurosurgeon told me that one more millimeter of displacement in this fracture would have been a 'real problem' with a completely different outcome. Dr. Daniel and the ER staff took excellent care of me in preventing further injury. They are first class medical professionals in my view." Steve is now fully recovered, but has quite a story to tell and pictures of the fracture to remind him of his close call. "I am so grateful to the ER staff and their quick thinking."
