Show C12 Wednesday, April 9, 2008 Vernal Express and Uintah Basin Standard Oldaker records a hat-trick as Uintah beats Union 6-3 By Casey Christensem Express Writer Kinnon Oldaker was not the only player on the field, although after his second goal in the first half the Cougars may have planned to play like he was. It didn't work as he shot up the field to complete his hat-trick. He was not the only one to score in this big 6-3 win for Uintah, as Derek Bunderson added two and Tyler Larsen hit another. "For some reason we get really excited to play Union," said Uintah Head Coach Jared McKeachnie. "We played well offensively of-fensively to score those six goals. Oldaker r ecored the hat trick and did so really on his own. His goals were taking his man one on one and making it happen. A great athletic and skillful attack." Uintah's ride in the high sky of winning was short lived as they faced their second opponent oppo-nent of the week and lost to the Waterford Ravens 6-1. The lone goal was scored by Bunderson. The game was not the dominating dominat-ing sort indicated by the score, Uintah kept the ball in front of the Raven's goal, but could not score. Defensively, McKeachnie feels there was plenty of room for improvement from his squad. "The comment at half time when it was four to one in favor of Waterford from the sideline referee was that watching the game and looking at the scoreboard score-board was on opposite sides of the spectrum," explained McKeachnine. "In other words we dominated,, had some great great shots, took care of the ball by passing to each other well and getting most of the 50-50 balls. But we failed miserably at marking mark-ing guys up on the transition to defense. We left guys open for easy shots and the shots they took went in." Uintah was not finished for the week, they traveled to Delta for a out of region contest. The two teams tied at five. The Utes used the opportunity to diagnose what their struggles on defense were caused by. McKeachnie said the Utes would have beaten the Rabbits, but added it was important impor-tant for the te,am to analyze then-selves then-selves in certan situations. "I believe we were able to ''"3 i i ' 1 - ' .... , .J - r refocus, make some important changes and really found out where everyone is scoring on us from," said McKeachnie. "As we were scored on by Delta we pulled the defense out and really talked over what happened. After a couple of quick changes and then watching video today, we will be practicing markingup for the rest of the week. Knowing where everyone is around you, staying with the guy until the -ball is cleared, staying between the man and our goal, and communicating com-municating with all the players on who has who." This preparation will prepare Uintah, according to McKeachnie, McKeach-nie, for the coming rematch against Judge Memorial - a team they lost to 5-1. The Bulldogs are a fast physical team, who take care of the ball well. "That is what will make the difference," he said. "The close shots will start falling our way and teams will not be able to score on us so easily anymore. I am excited and the team feels like we are starting anew, a clean slate to start the second round of region." "I believe the changes we make will help us in a win against them. Other teams have beat the Utes over top the Bulldogs, them so they are beatable."
