Show Vernal Express Wednesday, Apri 27, 1994 21 Ibss up between Utes and Lohi Tracti tieaim competes in pire-sflsitie, region nexft week by Eric F. Pye Sports Writer The Uintah track team competed in two meets last week and according accord-ing to Coach Richard Rust, learned a valuable lesson in the process. The first meet was another region affair at Park City. All the region 10 schools were in attendance, which made the Ute boys victory that much sweeter. The girls had a good showing as well, finishing 3rd with the varsity from both squads only competing in a select few races. "We wanted to save our varsity for the Richfield meet Saturday," Rust stated, "so we only let them compete com-pete in a couple of races." Despite the restraint, the boys compiled 128 points to outdistance 2nd place Lehi by 15. Wasatch finished fin-ished 3rd with 110.5 while Park City finished 4th with 82. Union was next with 45.5 and visiting Emery totaled 34 with just a few athletes competing in the field events. Over on the girls side, Lehi slipped away with the winning total of 139. The Lady Pioneers were followed fol-lowed closely by 2nd place park City with 133 and Uintah with 97. Emery was 4th with 51 followed by Wasatch with 50 and Union with 27. "I was surprised at the totals," Rust stated, "our main goal in the Park City meet was to give our junior ju-nior varsity experience. I had to do a double take when I saw the results." re-sults." The Richfield. meet on Saturday was one of only three qualifying meets for the season. Eleven of the fourteen 3A schools were present and participating. "We took what we considered to be a strong team out," Rust said, "but it turned out to be a weak performance for us." The Uic boys finished 3rd with 69 points. Their total tied them with Delia while Pine view took 2nd with 73 and Emery 1st with 133 points. The girls fared even worse, finish-ing finish-ing 7ih with 34 points. Emery also won the girls side with 106, followed fol-lowed by Ptncvicw with 104 and Carbon with 83. "Hopefully, the kids (earned a good lesson," Rust said, "we had been trying to warn them all day tortg lo stay out of (he sun. A lot of the kids thought they were okay because be-cause of the wind and cloud cover, but found out differently when they didn't have any energy left as the day wore on." Coach Rust fed the team will bounce back trgtnmng with this week's action at the i BYU Invitational which will be held on Friday. The team will compete at Wasatch Wednesday in the same capacity ca-pacity as the Park City meet The region 10 meet will take place next Tuesday and Wednesday at Park City with state the following weekend. week-end.
