After compiling a seven game winning streak, the girls have started start-ed a streak in the opposite direction. The team hosted 3rd ranked Pineview last Tuesday, dropping a tight 5-3 decision. The following Friday (April 22), the Lady Utes dropped their first region game of the season 8-2 to Union. When asked if she was worried about the direction and confidence of her team after the two losses, Coach Colleen Hawkins answered, "of course not! We lost two games to teams who are playing some of the hottest fastpitch in the state right now. Pineview has been in the top three (state rankings) all season. Union's only loss in region was to us. Actually, if we had to lose, I'm glad it happened when it did. I think the kids were starting to get distracted dis-tracted by the winning streak. Now we can just go out and play again without worrying or thinking about anything else but team ball." In the Pineview game, the difference differ-ence proved to be in the defensive match-up. Both team's pitchers threw great games, the difference, according to Hawkins, was the Lady Ute defense. "We committed r . . . , , , -. - five errors in the game. Three of their runs were unearned. Sometimes that will happen. The important thing about the game was the kids came away feeling if they play a little better, they can compete with anyone in the state." In a way, Pineview was responsible responsi-ble for the Lady Utes defeat at the hands of Union Friday. The Lady Cougars pulled off a great comeback come-back victory over Pineview and rode that emotional victory into the Uintah game. "We ran into an emotionally charged Union team," Coach Hawkins stated. "They were sky-high sky-high coming into the game and their play reflected that." The Lady Cougars wasted little 'time ' getting on the scoreboard. Third baseman Kristina Osborne, the second batter of the game ripped Lady Ute pitcher Brandt Staley's first pitch over the left field wall for a home run. It would be Union's only run of the inning, in-ning, but it charged the team up to a level they never left throughout the game. It appeared Uintah would respond in the bottom half of the first when Amorette Johnson walked and moved to third on Lori Mansfield's double. With two on and one out, Uintah seemed certain to at least tie the score. But a nice play by the Union shortstop on a pop fly kept the runners in place and when steady hitter Kari Christensen struck out, the threat ended. The entire game followed the same pattern. Every time the team appeared to be mounting a scoring threat, Union would come up with a play to stop it Trailing 3-0 in the 3rd, the Lady Utes finally pushed a run across in the inning, but Union responded in the 4th with three of their own to take a commanding 6-1 lead. The Lady Cougars added another run in the 5th and one more in the 7th for their 8 runs. Uintah pushed another run across in the bottom of the 7th when Brandi Staley tripled and scored on a Misty Critton grounder for the final 8-2 score. "We'll be fine," Hawkins said, "we will Ikeep the emphasis on team worlc and improvement, taking the games one at a lime, starting with Lehi next Tuesday (yesterday). If we keep our focus on things we can control, and the girls will do great." The team stands at 9-7 overall and 5-1 in region. Lehi was in town yesterday yes-terday (April 26) and the girls will finish their regular season schedule this Friday with a game against Wasatch at Hebcr.
