J for Vernal Express Wednesday, April 27, 1994 9 T-ball registration continues The (Jmtah Recreation Association is now taking registration registra-tion for Coach Pitch and T-Ball. T-Ball is for girls and boys ages 5-7 5-7 and Coach Pitch is for girls and boys ages 7-9. The cost per child is $20 for the first child and $15 for each additional child in the family. Games will be played Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday evenings. Games will begin at 5 p.m. at the softball fields. You can register at the StateCounty Building. Office hours are from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. For more information call 781-5486. G BRAD "B. J." Aldridge signs "I love you" using the sign bear. He and his parents, who are also hearing impaired, will meet with Governor Leavitt this week. B. J. is the Utah poster child Better Hearing and Speech Month. Vernal youth named state poster child Melanle Morrison Staff Writer Five year-old Brad, "B. J." Aldridge was selected by the Utah Speech and Hearing Association to be the poster child this year. He, along with his family, will meet with Governor Leavitt this week and then in May he will be announced an-nounced as the poster child at the annual Speech and Hearing Convention in Park City. B. J. is the son of Bruce and Barbara Aldridge. lie was diagnosed diag-nosed with a severe to profound hearing lost with he was around II months old. Both his parents are hearing impaired and he has two brothers and a sister who show no hearing but. When B. ). w&t fixvt dufncHcd as have a hearing impairment, it was frustrating to his parents. They remembered re-membered having to leave home at a young u$t to sumd the Deaf School in Qf6ct and ae their son would also have to attend the school. But B. J. is able to stay at home and be with his family and still attend Uintah School District's specialized preschool. The Bureau of Communicative Disorders has done extensive audiological work ups on B. J. and he is enrolled in the Early Intervention and Preschool Programs. He has also received help from the Utah School for the Deaf and the Vernal Elks Lodge helped purchase hearing aides for him a couple of years ago. Shortly after he was diagnosed, he had difficulty communicating with others. His parents used total com-munication com-munication in the home and wanted B. J. to do the same. He worked real hard to be able to communicate and made ccllcni progress. Now he knows how to sign, but he also communicates by using his voice and can count and recite the alphabet alpha-bet According k) his special education teacher, Anita CaUcr, B. "He is very intelligent in-telligent and is able to figure out complex skills that need to be done in school. Other children in the class are always wanting to play with B. J. even if they can not sign with him. But B. J. can generally figure out what the other children want" He likes to win, Caldcr said, and tries to outsmart the teacher so he can win at whatever game they are playing. She said he also shows a lot of empathy for other children and docs not appear to think of himself him-self as different from anyone else. "He has i twinkle in his eye that leu you know that he loves life and feels good about himself," she added.
