Pye Sports Writer The Utah YABA State Championship Bowling Tournament came to town over the weekend with 160 junior bowlers and their families participating. The tournament runs through next weekend when the 'other' 140 bowlers will try their hands at the coveted championship in 5 different divisions in scratch and handicap events in both boys and girls divisions. divi-sions. The action began Saturday morning morn-ing and continued on through the day until about 6 p.m. Saturday evening. The top 15 2-man teams from each game were awarded award-ed prizes and gifts donated by local merchants. The first three recipients of the Vernal YABA scholarship fund were named with Raymond Cheshire, Cody Morey and Misty Chrans receiving the honors. The tournament began Saturday at the Dinah Bowl with an opening ceremony which featured the Pledge of Allegiance given by Dustin Cheshire, National Anthem sung by Dixie Birchell and Lisa Lee. Father Mike Winter of the St. James Catholic Church offered an opening prayer and was followed by Vernal YABA President Jana Warby welcoming wel-coming the contestants. Mayor Hccncy and Dinah Bowl owner Benny Saiz also presented welcomes wel-comes and then introduced YABA State Secretary Mary Moscr and Treasurer Mike Siller. Play is scheduled to begin the week of May 9th and continue through the summer. sum-mer. Cost for the league will be $380 per team. Play this year will be on Monday nights for the women's league and Tuesday and Wednesday nights for the men's league. The recreation association will kick off the Softball season with the annual Ice Breaker Tournament on Friday and Saturday, May 6 and 7th at the CityCounty Park. Cost for the tournament is $75 per team. Team registrations will be taken at the recreation office in the StateCounty Building and teams must be registered by Friday, April 29th at 5:00 p.m. For more information informa-tion contact the recreation office at 781-5486. Lifeguard Training class The Uintah Recreation Association and the Indoor Swimming Pool will be sponsoring an American Red Cross Lifeguard Training class. The class will begin on Tuesday, April 26th and will be held every Tuesday and Thursday from 6-10 p.m. and Saturdays from 8:00 a.m. to noon for four weeks, the last day being Saturday, May 21sL This class is for those ages IS and over and cost for the training which docs include CPR and 1st Aid Training is $78.50.
