Scott Simper, Steve Nawahine and others dart Approximately 60 athletes turned out for the first day of football practice prac-tice at Uintah High School, Monday under the direction of second year coach Hank Nawahine, III and battled battl-ed teammates and the hot sun while preparing for the season opener in Vernal, Friday, August 29 against arch-rival Union High School. Ute footballers have been competing in three workouts each day. "The first session from 7 a.m. to 9 a.m. was used for learning offensive and defensive systems and working on conditioning drills," said Nawahine. "Football players were also put through physical fitness testing stations. The stations were used to lest speed, agility, reaction and endurance. We had everyone run the 40 yard dash, three times with a thirty second rest break. They also competed in a 20 yard shuttle run, twice, which contained a change of direction. "We also got the stretching routine down and we do that before every practice. It keeps our players from getting injured because they are loose and warmed up." Uintah High School had its first winning regular season at 5-4 for the first time in 20 years and they also competed in the state tournament last year. "I'm pleased with the good condition condi-tion of our football players. Heat has been a problem, but they have to get used to it. The big difference this year is attitude-it is real positive. They want to be there on the football field," stated Nawahine. There will be three new members on the Uintah High School football team coaching staff. Frank Barker, who is from Soda Springs, Idaho, will be the defensive coordinator and will also coach defensive linemen and running backs. Barker will be the girls basketball coach. Eric Pye will coach the defensive backs and Hank Nawahine IV, son of head coach Hank Nawahine III, will be in charge of the receivers. Ed Johnson will coach the offensive offen-sive line and sophomore team coaches will be Kim Peterson and Mike Petersen. The Utes will host the Union Cougars in their first game and the Roosevelt team will have a new coach in the name of Paul Maggio. "We have been going twoa-days and working on conditioning, agility skills, lifting weights and running timed 40 yard dashes," remarked Maggio. The Cougars will have their second game, September 5. The I'les will battle the Carbon Dinos in Price, September 5 and the Bulldogs In Provo, September 12. The Utes will face Murray on the road in a practice game, Wednesday, October 8 and will clash with the Lions in Payson, October 16. Uintah will host Spanish Fork, October 24. Uintah defeated Payson and Spanish Fork last season. Vernal 6th crew pockets second Vernal 6th pocketed second place in the Senior Area Tournament in Price, Saturday. The Vernal 6th team lost two championship games to Huntington by one run. The Vernal 6th team had a perfect record of 3-0 going into the championship champion-ship title games. Softball, race meets slated Runners in the Uintah Basin are invited in-vited to participate in three and five mile runs, Saturday, September 6 In Naples. The runs are being sponsored by the Naples Energize Me Committee in coordination with Naples City's annual Energy Fair. Entry fee w ill be $7 and Includes a T-shirt. Registration will be held at the Naples City Office at 6:30 a m. The run will begin at 7 a m. No pre-registration pre-registration is required. Runners will be divided Into the following categories: 12 and under, 13 to 17. 18 to 25, 26 to 35, 36 to 45 and 44 and over. First, second and third places will be awarded in each age category. A grand prize will tie given to the overall fastest runner in each of the runs. All proceeds will be donated lo the Naples Park fund. A ladies sflball tournament will also be held on September 11 Entry fee Is $ W per team. Trophies will be presented to first, serohd and third place teams.
