Hidden behind the facade, which is now being remodeled, are old stone entrances, an ancient an-cient bank vault, old stone stairs, , a hand dug furnace room and many more original parts oi me buildings. A myriad of different stories could be told about the changes in the businesses and of those who shopped there. Butch Cassidy purchased a 45 caliber pistol at one of the establishments In the year 1895, according to J.C. Penney manager Irvin Haws. The site where the J.C. Penney store is now located is the same place the "Scared to LVath" Fort as built after the Meeker Massacre. Haws said log homes were picked up and moved to the fort from outside town where people would feel safe from Indian attacks. "The wooden floor still squeaks the same as it did years ago when this was the old Ashley Co op," noted Haws. "The best thing atxitit this row of buildings is that today's owners of the coop, which has passed down through the generations, genera-tions, are showing faith in the shopping spirit t( downtown Vernal Ver-nal by spending thousands of dollars remodeling the building. We still make our rent checks out to the old established institution of Ashley Co-op that now belongs to Ralph Siddoway, Allen Ben-nion Ben-nion and Morgan Merkley. All these guys are descendants in some way of the original owners." Haws said there is an old bank vault located in the Thorne building and J.C. Penney still houses a cooler that was used by Ashley Co-op which is, "to heavy to move." He discovered old bottles, bot-tles, a part of a lamp holder, bullets and other antique items in the building's crawl space. Haws promised these will soon be put into a display case at Penncys along with some other local historic items for public viewing. More changes besides the remodeling are taking place in this strip of businesses. Sullivan's Furniture will be moving into the space vacated by Western Auto. They will join Anderson's Jewelry, Thome's, Gilley's Carpets, Arn's Wood Shop and J.C. Penney along the street. Gilley's has recently done some "back yard" work to spruce up their business location and to make it easier for customers to enter from the rear. "The remodeling and fixing up are Indications that people believe in Vernal and they know there is still a lot of good business to l had here," concluded Haws. J C. Penny was established on the corner of Main and Vernal Avenue on June 17, J 932 and it is obvious from the altitude of the manager that Ihry are here to slay. SHOP WHERE Butch Cassidy shopped!
