Show 30 Vernal ExfeSS Wednesday, May 2, 1 984 Union fies for 1st p By Aldon Rachele Express Spoils Editor High throws, low throws, non-catches non-catches and a crash in the outfield doomed the Union Cougars as they were defeated by Emery, 7-2, Wednesday, Wednes-day, April 25 in a game on the Helper field, which decided the first and second se-cond place teams in Region 9. Union and Emery ended the regular season tied for first place in Region 9 at 9-1. The two teams split a doubleheader during league action. Emery was retired in order in the top of the first inning as LeaMaster committed an out at first base on a dropped third strike, Cory Mortensen flied out and Shawn Roper grounded out. Union had two base runners in the bottom of the first inning, but they couldn't take advantage as the runners failed to score. Mike Ross and Bryan Eldredge committed the first two outs, but Wayne Gingell reached first base on a high throw. Chad Richard was walked with two outs and Tracy Hall struck out with two men on base. A low and wide throw enabled Morley of Emery to arrive safely at first base as first basemen Richard caught the ball, but was unable to keep his foot on the bag. Union made up for the error as pitcher Mike Acord fired the ball to Richard and picked off Morely at first base for the first out. Hansen flied out and Jim Lund drilled drill-ed a single by the pitcher and up the middle. However, Emery wasted the scoring opportunity as Kelly Mortensen struck out in the top of the second inning. Union garnered the first lead in the ball game at 1-0 when they scored one counter in the bottom of the second inning. in-ning. Ross hit a shot to Emery pitcher Cory Mortensen, who nabbed the ball and fell down, but was able to get the ball in time to his first baseman for the third out. The Spartans scored two counters in the top of the third inning to grab a lead of 2-1. Olsen flied out, but Williams singled. LeaMaster grounded ground-ed out, and Cory Mortensen lined a slow shot just under the glove of the pitcher and motored to first base. Acord had two strikes on Roper, but the Emery baseballer hit the baseball and a high throw placed him on first base and scored Williams with the game tying run. Morley blasted a pitch for a double and drove in Mortensen with a 2-1 lead. Roper was tagged out at home plate as he also tried to score on the double by Morley. A passed ball by Emery's catcher on a third strike placed Union's Gingell on first base with one out in the bottom of the third inning. Emery center-fielder center-fielder Lund turned in an excellent one handed catch of a ball hit deep by Richard for the second out. A single by Hall moved Gingell to second base, but Ryan Eldredge struck out for the third out. Two runs were scored by Emery in the top of the fourth inning for a 4-1 lead over the Union Cougars. Hansen grounded out, but Lund and Kelly Mortensen produced singles. Dave Oveson came in as a runner for Mortensen. Lund scored on a ground out by Olsen. An error put Williams on the base paths and Oveson stomped on home plate to put the Emery team up by three runs at 4-1. LeaMaster hit into in-to a force to end the inning. The Cougars scored one run in the bottom of the fourth inning to reduce the Spartan lead to two runs at 4-2. Olsen singled and stole second. Olsen advanced to third base on a ground out by Joe Arnold. Riding struck out, but Olsen scored Union's second run on a passed ball. Ross was whiffed for the third out. V i. i . "V . Morley was walked and Hansen hit a ball toward Union outfielders. Cougar left and center fielders charged toward the ball. The left fielder caught the ball, but the center fielder ran into him and knocked the ball out of his glove. Hansen grined a double on the error and Morley crossed home plate. Lund was walked and stole second base. Union's catcher fired the ball to second on the stealing attempt and the umpire called Lund safe and Hansen scored to give Emery a 6-2 lead. Kelly Mortensen was walked and Olsen flied out to get the Cougars out of the inning. Bryan Eldredge got on the base paths when the catcher dropped the third strike. Gingell struck out, but Richard was walked in the bottom of the fifth inning. However, Hall struck out and Ryan Eldredge grounded out with two men on the bases. Emery was blanked one, two, three in the top of the sixth inning. Olsen led off with a single in the bottom bot-tom of the sixth inning for the Union Cougars, but was forced out at second base. Arnold motored to first base on a fielder's choice as Olsen broke up the doubleplay. Riding committed the second se-cond out and Ross grounded out as the ball arrived just barely in time at first base. Emery added one more run in the top of the seventh inning for a 7-2 lead. Roper was walked and moved to second se-cond on a sacrifice bunt. Hansen drilled drill-ed a shot into left field. The outfielder out-fielder overran the ball the Roper scored Emery's seventh run. An error put Lund on first base, but the Cougars gained the second out when they caught Hansen in a rundown between home and third. Mortensen flied out for the final out. Union was shutout in the bottom of the seventh inning and the final score was Emery, 7 and Union, 2. Bryan Eldredge flied out to the catcher and Gingell struck out. Wasatch grabbed a 1-0 lead in the first inning as Hiatt stomped on home plate. Union grabbed a 3-1 lead due to three runs in the top of the second inning. Gingell singled and scored. Ryan Eldredge and Olsen got on the base paths on errors and scored. Arnold and Ross singled in the inning. Both teams were blanked in the third inning, but Union scored two runs in the top of the fourth inning for a 5-1 lead. Olsen singled and scored on a double by Ross. Union's Ross crossed home plate on a double by Bryan Eldredge. The Cougars added two more runs in the top of the fifth inning for a 7-1 advantage. Richard doubled and scored. Gingell singled and stomped on home plate. Ryan Eldredge singled and Olsen reached Bowlers nab title Richens Concrete Specialists (1st half winners) and Combustion Engineering (2nd half winners) of the Maverick League had their roll-off recently. Richens Concrete Specialists were successful in becoming the first place team for the year and Combustion Combus-tion Engineering placed second. Each team received a sponsor trophy and individual in-dividual trophies. The first place team received $699.88 and the second place team $407.98. The Pro Shop won the high team series handicap title and Richens Concrete Con-crete Specialists won the high team game handicap crown. The high individual in-dividual series handicap title was won by Grant Richens and nabbing the high individual game handicap was Merlin Richens.
