Tie cut in reading contest Principal Len Gotfredson's tie is getting get-ting shorter and Ashley Elementary students are reading more as the librarians sponsor a reading contest which will run from April 23 through May 4. Each day the students report the number of pages they read the day before. The librarians make totals and the class that reads the most for the day cuts one inch from Mr. Gotfredson's Gotfred-son's tie for each 1,000 pages they have NEWBORNS April 22, 1984 a girl born to Jodie C. and Brian W. The first day the students of Ashley Elementary read 5,800 pages and Teresa Phillips' first grade won the privilege to cut the tie by reading 1,348 pages. David Nicolls was awarded the honor of doing the actual cutting by reading 154 pages, the most in his class. Rainy Day fair to be held May 4 "Prepare for a Rainy Day" is the theme of the program to be presented Friday, May 4 for the Vernal First, Fifth and Ninth Wards of the LDS Church at the chapel at 250 North, 200 West from 6 to 9 p.m. A nursery will be provided for small children and the older ones will be entertained with movies. Among the activities available during dur-ing the evening will be a cake walk with cakes provided by the Young Women's organization, and a bread demonstration will be given showing the first step of grinding the wheat, mixing the bread, to baking to producing the finished product. Hot bread and honey butter will be served throughout the evening as part of the demonstration. In the cultural hall will be displays on home production, gardening and methods of preserving food such as canning, dehydrating and freezing food. A "tasting table" will be available featuring wheat and bean cookery along with some culinary surprises. The displays will feature ways to help families maintain "good health, provident living, financial resource management, and how to strengthen the home with social, emotional and spiritual strength." f " i f f '4 500 North 5 o o in 500 West HI -i Campus Capers By Tabatha Deans The new class officers for next year were announced at the Traffic Jam Dance Friday. Senior class president is Dennis Vincent, vice-president, Cynthia Cyn-thia Peterson and secretary, Kim Wall. Junior class president, Jon Nash, vice president, Michelle Hatch, secretary, Tonya McKee. Congratulations Congratula-tions to our new officers. There was a Model United Nations competition Friday and Saturday at the University of Utah. Uintah performed per-formed very well and several individuals in-dividuals received recognition. Colleen Morris, Cyndee Rasmussen and Max Spiker received superior ratings. Gary Gray, Chriss Simmons, Diane Chamberlain and Bruce Atwood earned earn-ed excellent marks. The state drama team also participated par-ticipated at the University of Utah last weekend. Sarita Downard received a superior in mono act, Briant Hall received a superior in pantomime, Steve Gober was awarded an excellent in mono act, Paul Cochran and Michelle Hatch received excellent in pantomime and Robert Clement won an excellent in humorous interp. An excellent series of videotapes have been developed by the State Office Of-fice of Education. They provide a very sensitive and informative approach to the critical issues related to sexuality. sexuali-ty. Uintah County 4-H leader wins award Doris Humphries of Vernal was honored as the outstanding volunteer 4-H leader for Uintah County at the Utah State 4-H Leadermete held in Provo April 17-18. Doris was recognized for her oustan-ding oustan-ding volunteer service to 4-H in Uintah Uin-tah County. The award was presented by Dr. Paul Larsen, vice president of extension programs at Utah State University. Doris has contributed to Uintah county 4-H programs by serving as a 4-H leader for 10 years in projects consisting con-sisting of clothing, foods, food preservation, preser-vation, and serving as president on the Adult Council, and is presently secretary of the council. She is the wife of Dwayne Humphries Hum-phries and the mother of six children. Medals of gold, silver and bronze were awarded by Michelle McKinley, Miss Ute Tribe, to the top three male, female and Girl Scout finishers. Gold first place went to John Glenn with a time of 16:48, silver 2nd place winner was Monte Farnsworth with a time of 18:22 and bronze 3rd place to George Cannon with a time of 18:42. The top three female runners were gold first place winner Mary Caldwell with a time of 22:38, silver 2nd place winner Linda Gerris with a time of 23 : 59 and bronze 3rd place winner was Rozanna Cuch with a time of 26:47. In the Girl Scout category, gold first place went to Marcie Briggs with a time of 23 : 11, silver 2nd place went to Kori White with a time of 23 : 26 and the bronze 3rd place winner was Celeste Skabelund with a time of 25:13. Golden Age Activities By Wanda Powell The Rasmussen family furnished the entertainment following lunch last Monday. Elma Smith, Marie Hatch, Willard Rasmussen and Manford (Doc) Rasmussen played a number of instruments. The old tunes were a treat for all of us. Then their grandchildren grand-children played and sang for us. We want to say thanks so much to all of you. The art classes are still being held each Monday after lunch, if any of you are interested, come and join the group. Bingo winner was Lena Mast with four games, second place was Evelyn Crenshaw and Alice Mott, each with three games. Erma Sessions is in the hospital. Reed Rich has been ill and is at the home of his brother, Kenneth Rich. We hope that both Erma and Reed will feel better soon.
