BRETT HART Sports Editor VIEWMONT VIKINGS BOUNTIFUL The Viewmont Vikings return from a semi-final loss to Alta in the state soccer tournament tour-nament last season to rebuild under the leadership of I first-year coach William Veal. Veal, a former college player in Texas, brings with I him an arsenal of soccer know-how foreign to the usual style of play common in Northern Utah. "I see a good background in soccer and a lot of community support through the youth programs," Veal explained. "What we plan to do is harness that talent and take it one step higher using my knowledge as a player and a coach from out of state. ' Still, know-how and love of the game don't eliminate elim-inate all the challenges. I "Our major challenge this season will be getting I the team together under a different program and style I of soccer than they're used to. 1 "I'd like to use their Jalents and mold them into the I style of soccer Td like to see them play. I Obviously, this may be more difficult for some of J the juniors and seniors who are used to a different J program than the sophomores who are new. I It's a combination of give and take. The kids have I played together for a long time." Veal added that soccer fans can expect to see the Vikings take on a different style of play this season. "Fans will see a more controlled game," Veal explained. ex-plained. "It will be a fast-paced style of play, but it won't necessarily be a fast-break style of play. "I'd say it will be more of a cross between a methodic German style of soccer and a Brazilian style of play. I "The kids are adjusting. They're working hard and I responding well to our new program which consists of a lot of conditioning." I Veal and his Vikings got their first taste of I preseason action Friday against Timpview on the I Bountiful Junior High soccer field. And, for all intents and purposes, the Vikes are off and running shutting out Timpview 2-0. Viewmont forward Nick Berry sank both Viking goals Friday. "We are doing well in terms of development," Veal said. "The kids are developing well in terms of From the basketball court to the soccer field, it didn't take Viewmont's Jason Pitt long to make the transition as he winds up to center the ball in front of Timpview's goal Friday at Bountiful Junior High. The Vikes went on to shut out Timpview 2-0. (Clipper photo by G. Brett Hart) understanding what I want. "Timpview was a good team, but they died by the end of the game. We were still running while they were walking. So we did have an edge in conditioning. condition-ing. The Vikings take on Keams this afternoon at 3 p.m.; however, the match of the week is slated for Friday evening between the Vikes and the Woods Cross Wildcats under the lights at Viewmont High. Game time is 6:30 p.m. In other soccer action, the Bountiful Braves began their season with a shut-out on the road over Mountain Moun-tain View, 1-0 in a blustery night battle. Jeff Jeppson scored the game's only goal. "It was the first game; we played everybody to see what we had," Bountiful coach Dave Wigham said. "The wind was really a factor during the first half." Wigham explained that, for the most part, he was pleased with his team's first performance. "We stood around a lot during the first half, so I got on them at halftime. And they played great during the second half," Wigham explained. Defensively for the Braves, goalie John Barlow had his hands full against both Mountain View and the wind. However, sweeper Sean Bromley was there to help out, making a number of saves when Barlow was caught out of position. l "We feel fortunate to have won this first one with the weather and all," Wigham said. "We have a long way to go, and the kids know it. But they have the right attitude to do it." |
