Show Celebrities tabbed for skills conference , SALT LAKE CITY Hcisman Trophy winner Ty i Detmer, entertainer Ben Vereen and j Mickey Mouse will join the Utah Federation for Drug-Free Youth at the annual Life Skills Conference, April 1 1-13 in the Salt Palace. Parents, educators and youth are I invited to attend the seventh annual conference where relevant life skills topics from parenting, communication, communica-tion, outdoor activities, gangs and satanism will be discussed. The conference also features numerous nu-merous motivational speakers, prominent sports persons, and experts ex-perts in media and sociological fields to discuss drug-free and alcohol-free lives. Alan Ashton, WordPerfect president; presi-dent; Jeff Chatman, BYU basketball star; Carole Mikita, KSL newscaster; Elder John K. Car-mack, Car-mack, The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints; Miss America; Merlin 01 sen and the Osmond Boys will conduct workshops or make appearances during the three-day conference. On Thursday, April 11, the Children's Miracle Network will also join in the efforts with a live, national television broadcast from 4 to 6 p.m. Pre-registration and registering in "teams" of 10 is the best value, said Yo Uno, federation president. Registration costs includes all three days of conference workshops, general gen-eral sessions and the television broadcast. The conference is planned and organized by the Utah Federation for Drug-Free Youth, a statewide, non-profit volunteer organization. It was organized on Nov. 15, 1984 for the purpose of networking community com-munity groups that were brought together in November 1983, during the "The Chemical People Project' Pro-ject' a nationwide prevention effort Buster," as in Spud McKenzie, the beer mascot. Obermeier's topics for the Life Skills conference include "Natural Highs," a comparison between "natural highs" versus "drug highs." An experimental part to the presentation will actually change the brain chemistry of the participants par-ticipants through the use of humor and understanding energy techniques. techni-ques. "Creative Parenting" focuses on proactive parenting, learning how to build family fun, coping together, problem solving, building self-esteem, self-esteem, adolescent issues, and understanding how the American family has changed today. "Ah Ha-Ha Ha Connection" looks at the laughter response and the physiological changes it brings about in the body using humor relative to the particular audience. It is an entertaining type of presentation presen-tation strictly for making people laugh and learn about the relation-ship relation-ship of laughter to ' well being. ' UFDY has members throughout the state, and has a close working relationship with public, religious, and private anti-drug and alcohol abuse programs in Utah. Gov. Norman H. Bangerter has declared April as Parent and Youth Alcohol and Drug Education Month and encourages all citizens to participate par-ticipate in this effort to make parents aware of what they can do to help their children avoid using alcohol and other drugs. The Life Skills conference is a major effort toward this declaration. There will also be a limited edition edi-tion NBA Utah Jazz poster featuring featur-ing team players and staff promoting pro-moting the conference. Guest speaker George Obermeier has been nationally recognized for his work in development and training train-ing with student assistance programs. pro-grams. He has conducted presentations in nearly all 50 states and other countries as well. His work with "Natural Highs," and "The Use of Humor and Creativity to Avoid Burnout," have received national acclaim. Obermeier holds a r master's 'degree in psychosocial aspects of physical activities with a minor in psychology from Perm ' State University, where he also taught for eight years. He has done doctoral work in sports psychology, as well as, continuing education work at Rutgers Summer School of Alcohol Studies. Obermeier considers himself an education humorist with a positive prevention message. His presentation presen-tation appeals to people of all ages. He has dubbed himself "Spud i |
