Show Wildcats boast perfect record in girls' soccer By G.BRETT HART WOODS CROSS--The Wood Cross Wildcats remained unbeaten this week in girls' soccer competition competi-tion while the Braves, Darts and Vikings all suffered setbacks losing to region foes. Woods Cross edged the Bountiful Boun-tiful Braves 3-1 in Region Six action ac-tion Sept. 13. Both teams remained scoreless until late in the second half when Woods Cross sophomore Pam Franklin put the 'Cats on the board. It didn't take long for Bountiful to retaliate, however, as sophomore Holly Zollinger evened the score. Unfortunately for the Braves, that was as close as they would come to upsetting one of the toughest girls' soccer teams in the state. Franklin scored again with about five minutes left in the game, and Bountiful's Holly Winegar sealed the 'Cats victory with another goal shortly thereafter. Wildcat Coach Kevin Rigby, however, felt lucky to fight off what he called a surprisingly tough Bountiful Boun-tiful team. "We didn't expect what we got. Bountiful played well, and we didn't play so well," said Rigby. The Wildcats had a bye on Sept. 11. w In other South Davis girls' soccer competition, Davis High suffered losses to both Clearfield and Weber. The Darts lost 2-1 to the Falcons at Clearfield on Sept. 12. Davis faced the Warriors at home on Sept. 14. Davis and Weber battled neck and neck for the entire game and remained tied at one with less than two minutes to go. Weber drove the length of the field and scored its winning goal off a deflected shot that slipped through the hands of the Darts' goalie. The Viewmont Vikings suffered a 3-1 loss to the Lancers on Sept. 12 but came back to slip by the Clearfield Clear-field Falcons at home winning 2-1. The Vikings jumped in front behind a Lisa Ashby goal at the five minute mark. Viewmont held the lead until Clearfield evened the score with about three minutes left in the first half. Tonya Black shot the Vikes' winning goal in the second half. w |
