Show Poet Ingrid Wendt hosted by VHS's English Dept. For the third year in a row, the Viewmont High School English Department has hosted a poet in residence. Ingrid Wendt, professional profes-sional poet, from Eugene, Ore., worked with tenth grade honors students and creative writing students to develop creativity and poetic writing skills. "I give this residency a top priority because of the positive impact im-pact it has on students," stated Paul Waite, principal. Although the residency is nor- mally funded, in part, through a grant from the Utah Arts Council, this year the school is paying the total cost. Various complications in the application ap-plication process last year prevented the school from getting a grant. The Arts Council, using funds from the National Endowment Endow-ment for the Arts, not only provides 50 percent of the artist's salary, but also a rental car. This year the car will be furnished through the courtesy of Dan Eastman EagleJeep. "We're very appreciative of the generosity of Mr. Eastman," said Ken Zeeman, English department chair. "This is a good example of private business assisting worthwhile wor-thwhile educational projects." In addition to working directly with students April 21 through May 1, Wendt conducted an in-service workshop for members of the English department. The PTSA hosted a poetry reading social on Thursday, April 30 in the Little Theater at Viewmont. View-mont. Wendt read student poetry as well as some of her own. r T r I I i 0 9. - T ! i 5 i s, v !
