Show 6 students among NMSC winners The National Merit Scholarship Corporation (NMSC) has announced announc-ed that six Davis County students were among the 2,400 winners of Merit Scholarships funded by colleges col-leges and universities. These Merit Scholars are among a total of more than 6,300 distinguished high school seniors in the 1992 competition who will receive Merit Scholarships. Some 120 private and 85 public higher education institutions, located in 43 states and the District of Columbia, are offering Merit Scholarships for use at the sponsor college or university. College-sponsored College-sponsored Merit Scholarships provide pro-vide between $250 and $2,000 for each year of undergraduate study. Winners were chosen by officials of the sponsor institution from among . Merit Program Finalists who will attend that college. ' Students in over 19,000 U.S. high schools entered the 1992 Merit Program by taking the 1990 Preliminary Scholastic Aptitude TextNational Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test (PSATMSQT), which served as an initial screen of some 1.1 million participants. In the fall of 1991, approximately 15,000 of the top scorers, representing repre-senting about half of one percent of graduating seniors in every state, were designated semifinalists. Only semifinalists had an opportunity oppor-tunity to advance to finalist standing stan-ding and compete for Merit Scholarships. Schol-arships. In order to become a finalist, a semifmalist had to fulfill a rumber of additional requirements that included in-cluded meeting extremely high academic aca-demic standards, being endorsed and recommended by the high school principal, confirming earlier test performance on a second test, and providing information about activities, ac-tivities, interests, and goals. Winners of Merit Scholarships are being chosen from the group of 14,000 finalists. County winners are: John V. Mayer, Viewmont Fligh, University of Utah Merit Scholarship; Gregory N. Nielson, Viewmont, Utah State University Merit Scholarship; William B . Ince, II, V ie wmont High, Brigham Young University Merit Scholarship; Daniel P. Wendel, Viewmont High, University Univer-sity of Utah Merit Scholarship; Kirk F. Sorensen, Davis High, Utah State University Merit Scholarship; Loren Hulse, Davis High, University Univer-sity of Utah Merit Scholarship. |
