Show Davis County prepsters win track medals By TOM HARALDSEN Clipper Correspondent POCATELLO Athletes from four Davis County high schools brought home a total of 32 medals from the 16th annual Simplot Games indoor track and field championships held Friday and Saturday at Idaho State University's Holt Arena. Leading the way were members of the Woods Cross High track club, which hauled in 19 medals, including eight gold, during the two-day event. Track athletes from Bountiful, Davis and Viewmont also performed during the annual event, which had entries from 17 states and Canada. It was the largest contingent ever in the meet's history. Woods Cross captured gold medals in two relays, the coed 4 X 200 meters and the coed 4 X 400 meters. The Wildcats also set a new meet record during Friday qualifying qualify-ing in the boys' 4 X 200 meters. Taking gold medals Saturday were the coed 4 X 200 team of Michelle Devey, Pete McConkie, Natalie Anderson and Brian Ashby. They won their race in a time of 1:40, just 2 seconds off the meet record. The 4 X 400 team of Emily Kilgore, John Hall, Celeste Smith and Brandon Allen also took the gold medal in a winning time of 4:03.36. Devey, McConkie and Ashby later won additional medals, Devey in the girls 4 X 200 relay along with Kilgore, Michelle Trinamon and Anderson. They finished fourth in a fine time of 1:53.94. Ashby and teammates Rob Davis, Dave Marx and McConkie took third in the finals of the 4 X 200, and McConkie Mc-Conkie placed second in the 55 meter hurdles, earning a silver medal. Anderson also took home a fifth place medal in the 55 meter dash, and Trinamon won a bronze medal when she joined another school's relay team when that team was a runner short due to an injury. Woods Cross almost had another team qualify for the finals when its girls' 4 X 400 team of Maurine Newland, Randy Slack, Jamie Lovell and Jennifer Gerber just missed by one spot earning a finals berth with a fine effort during Friday Fri-day qualifying. Davis High brought home five medals, Scott Thredgold taking fifth in the 200 meters and the relay team of Trudy Bailey, Mark Calvin, Paige Scott and Bobby Shepherd taking home silver medals for a second se-cond place finish in the coed 4 x 400. Bountiful High's Jenny Gardner tied for fifth in the high jump, earning earn-ing a medal, and the boys' 4 X 400 team of Phil Tate, Adam Smith, Jason Peterson and Brad Knoles took fifth in their race, earning medals. Viewmont High distance star Scott Keate won the gold medal in his specialty, the 1600 meters, F ning in a time of 4:21.56, just J-cond J-cond off the meet record. In addition, addi-tion, Dane Miller took home a fifth-place fifth-place medal in the 1600 and Rob Holm an placed fifth and earned a medal in the 400 meters. |
