Show Thinclads In Triangular Against Wyoming, USU By BRIAN NUTTING Chronicle Sports Writer Coming off a good performance in a three-way meet in Arizona last week, the University of Utah track team invades Logan Saturday for a triangular meet with Utah State and Wyoming. The competition will begin at 1 p.m. Utah should be favored because of its strength in the running events and the relays. re-lays. Utah State, due to its strength in field events, probably will finish second. Wyoming, the weak sister of the WAC in track competition, should finish last. Utah may be hurt by the absence of several competitors due to minor min-or injuries. However, Coach Carl-ston Carl-ston is entering a 36 man team, and he expects the replacements to perform well. Bob Battle in the sprints and Hugh Voorhees in the hurdles have been performing especially es-pecially well lately and are expected ex-pected to score well Saturday. Ron Taylor, Darryl Busby and Larry Stott are favored to sweep the 440 while Bob Batie and Bob Rodenhizer should dominate the sprints. Frank Wo j tech in the half mile, and Mike Roberts in the mile are also expected to do well. Scott Bringhurst and Bob Wood in the two-mile are almost a minute bet ter than their closest competition, and should win easily. Hugh Voorhees, Voor-hees, Delane McGarvey and Jim Hawkins have been looking good in the hurdles and are slightly ahead of the competition. Field Events Close The field events should be a real fight between the Utes and the Aggies while Wyoming has a few men that could capture first places. Utah's Dick Worley and Utah State's Marden Connelly should wage a real battle in the pole vault as should Ute Dwight Staten and Aggie Mike Mercer in the shot put. 'The javelin will be a real dogfight with Marcel Chappuis, Al Weed and Henry Groen of Utah, Ain Roost and Mike McBride of USU and Mike Prudenti of Wyoming all fighting for first place honors. George McKinney of Utah and. Dallas Jackson of Wyoming should fight it out in the high jump. Other Utah hopefuls include : Don Wassom, Gene Cabading and Curt Dudnick in the long jump; Dudnick in the discus and Wassom in the triple jump. Both of Utah's relay teams (440 relay Batie, Rodenhizer, Roden-hizer, Dickson, Cabading, and mile relay Stott, Busby, Peterson, Taylor) Tay-lor) are favored to win rather handily. |
