Show 'Duke' Manzione Murdered in Beaver Service Station Robbery Attempt Gunmen Shoot Youth in Cold Blood; Captured in Las Vegas Roundup Howard W. (Duke) Man- i zione, 21, former Beaver high school athlete, died Saturday in a Cedar City hospital after being shot by armed thieves who attempted to hold up the Standard Service Station in Beaver where Manzione was employed. He was shot four times, twice iji the head, onoe in the spine, and once in the shoulder. First degree murder charges were filed in Beaver Tuesday against Verne A. Braasch, 24, and Melvin L. Sullivan, 19, who confessed the killing. They were arrested in Las Vegas Monday in a general round-up of suspicious suspi-cious characters after a description descrip-tion of the killers was broadcast to law enforcement officers in three states. They were returned re-turned to Beaver by Sheriff Jasper Puffer and Highway Patrolman Pa-trolman Ernest Pearce. Arraignment of the alleged killers will be at a special session ses-sion of Fifth District court in Beaver Saturday, before Third District Judge J. Allen Crockett of Salt Lake City. The defendants Tuesday re-enacted re-enacted the slaying at the service serv-ice station where Mr. Manzione was fatally wounded. They stated they had stopped at the service station twice, and gained confidence of the victim. The last time they were at the station, sta-tion, Mr. Manzione turned his back o nthem, Braasch stepped up within a foot of the attendant attend-ant and fired a shot which lodged in his spine, according to State Trooper Pearce. As Mr. Manzione turned around a second sec-ond shot was fired into his right arm by Sullivan. Mr. Manzione fell against Braasch, who shoved him away, and then two shots, one by each gunman, were fired at his head. The defendants were returned to the Iron County jail, after the preliminary hearing Tuesday, Tues-day, to be held for trial in the district court. Funeral services for Mr. Manzione Man-zione will be held at 2 p. m. Thursday in the Beaver Third Ward L D S chapel, with Bishop Wallace D. Yardley officiating. Burial will be in the Beaver City cemetery. Howard W. Manzione was born in Beaver August 1, 1928, a son of Joseph A. and LaPriel White Manzione.' He attended school in Beaver and in 1946 graduated from Beaver High school, where he had been junior jun-ior class president. Following his graduation from high school he had attended University of Utah before enlisting in the U. S. army at the age of 18. He entered B A C at Cedar City after his discharge from the service and had received wide recognition in Southern Utah for his playing on the B A C basketball team. He firsl participated in the sport in high school and during the las1 season at B A C had played forward on the college team. He planned to reenter B A C nexl quarter. On August 25, 1949, he mar : ried Carolyn Black in the Sail Lake L D S temple. Surviving are his parents his widow, five brothers, Joe i Manzione, serving an L D : mission to Reims, France; Pfc Gordon R.
