Show Memorial Week is proclaimed By proclamation of Francis T. Beaton, National Commander Comman-der of the Disabled American Veterans, a National Memorial Week, May 24 to 30, has been established to honor America's I disabled veterans. Said Com- ! mander Beaton: "We are in the centennial year of the original order issued by General John A. Logan, National Commander of the Grand Army of the Republic Repub-lic which first designated May 30th as a day to honor the dead of the Union Army who fell in batttle during the Civil War. This day has since been accepted by all America to pay j our respects to all our dead, but there has never been a ; time set aside to recognize the terrible price our disabled veterans vet-erans paid for our American victories. It is only fitting, therefore, that a special 'week' be created in their honor and it is especially appropriate this year when we observe the centennial cen-tennial of General Logan's original or-iginal General Order No. 11 directing the surviving members mem-bers of the GAR to 'strew with flowers the graves of comrades who died in defense of their country during the recent rebellion. |
